Spooky Halloween drawstring bag with a bat

Materials

Yarn: I use Soft FRAYA Cotton 8/4 100% Organic cotton 50g – 180 m, colors: black and orange. However, any thin cotton yarn will work.
Hook: I use a 2.0 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.

Abbreviations (US terms)

ch: chain
sl st: slip stitch
sc: single crochet
msc: modified single crochet
prev: previous
st: stitch

Notes

The size of my bag is 7.5 x 12.5 cm.

This pattern uses the tapestry crochet technique (you can find the tutorial here). The photo instructions below show how to make a bag. This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here).

You will work in continuous rounds, which means that in the end of a round you don’t join with a slip stitch, but instead continue making modified single crochets in the top of the first stitch of the round. Remember to use a marker showing the beginning of each round. Follow the color chart showing how you should change colors.

Pattern

The bag

Start by chaining 24 with black yarn.

Round 1: To make the first round, you will work down the chain, then turn and work in the other side of the chain. Make sc in every st of the chain starting from the second chain from your hook. Turn. 1 sc in the end of the chain, make sc in every st (starting with the one you have just worked into; now that st has 3 sc in total) until you come back to the beginning of the chain. 1 sc in the end of the chain. In total you should have 48 st. Don’t join with a sl st, instead continue with the next round.

Now add orange yarn and follow the color chart for all rounds until the end.

Round 2-24: msc in every st of the prev round.

Making the holes for the string:

Round 25: msc, *ch2, skip 2 st of the prev round, 2 msc*, rep ** 11 times. ch 2, skip 2 st of the prev round, msc.

Round 26: msc, *2 msc in the ch2 space of the prev round (make sure to grab the loose yarn hanging in the ch2 space in the prev round too), 2 msc*, rep ** 11 times. 2 msc in the ch2 space of the prev round, msc.

Round 27-31: msc in every st of the prev round.

In the end make 4 additional sl st in the back loop only in the next 4 st to even out the edge. Fasten off.

Making the string

Start by chaining. The length of the chain should be around 28-30 cm long. Make a row of slip stitches in the third loop of the chain as it is shown in photo instructions below. When you reach the end of the row, fasten off. You are ready to weave in the string into your bag. Done!

Color chart

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 48 stitches (48 columns in the chart). Rows represent rounds. For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left.

In the chart, empty squares indicate where you should make holes for the string. When you chain 2 for a hole, you cannot hide the yarn you are not working with: it will be ‘hanging’ in the hole. Don’t worry, when you will make round 26, you will grab both yarns you need to hide: the one in round 26 and the one in round 25. See photo instructions.

Round 1

1. Start by chaining 24 with black yarn. You will start working in the second chain from your hook.

2. So, make a single crochet in the second chain from your hook.

3. Keep making single crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

4. Then make one single crochet in the end of the chain.

5. Turn your work and make one more single crochet in the same stitch.

6. Then continue making single crochets in every stitch until you reach the end.

7. Make one single crochet in the end of the chain. In total you should have 48 stitches.

Round 2

8. Don’t join with a slip stitch. Instead insert your hook in the top of the first single crochet of the first round grabbing just the back loop.

9. Yarn over.

10. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook. In round 2 you have to introduce the orange yarn. So, take your orange yarn and put it behind your hook and in front of the black yarn like it is shown in the picture.

11. Yarn under the black yarn.

12. Pull the yarn through. Notice how the orange yarn is wrapped around with the black yarn.

13. Then insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop.

14. Yarn over the black yarn.

15. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

16. Yarn under the black yarn.

17. Pull the yarn through. You have just made a modified single crochet.

18. Start making another modified single crochet but stop when you have two loops on your hook. The next stitch should be orange, so you have to change yarn color.

19. Put the orange yarn up and yarn under.

20. Pull the yarn through. Now the orange yarn is ready to use.

21. Start making the next stitch with the orange yarn but stop when you have two loops on your hook because you have to change yarn color again.

22. So, put the black yarn up and complete the stitch with the black yarn.

23. Then make two full modified single crochets with the black yarn, start making the third one, but complete it with the orange yarn.

24. Start making the the next stitch with the orange yarn, but complete it with the black yarn because the next stitch should be black.

25. Complete the last stitch in round 2 with the orange yarn because the first stitch in round 3 is orange. Continue following the color chart.

Round 25

26. In round 25 you have to make holes for a string. Make one modified single crochet.

27. Then chain two.

28. Skip two stitches of the previous round and make a modified single crochet in the next stitch. You can see that the black yarn is hanging in the hole. That is fine.

29. Make another modified single crochet in the next stitch.

30. Keep working in the same way until the end of the round: chain two, skip two stitches and make two modified single crochets in the next two stitches.

Round 26

31. Make one modified single crochet.

32. Then insert your hook in the chain two space grabbing both black yarns like it is shown in the picture.

33. Yarn over the orange yarn.

34. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

35. Yarn under the orange yarn.

36. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook.

37. Make one more modified single crochet in the chain two space of the previous round.

38. Then make two modified single crochets in the next two stitches.

39. Make two modified single crochets in the next chain two space of the previous round and two modified single crochets in the next two stitches. Continue working in the same way until the end of the round.

Round 31

40. When you are done with round 31, you need to make a few slip stitches in the back loop only to even out the edge.

41. So, leave the orange yarn aside and insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop.

42. Yarn over the black yarn.

43. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

44. Next pull the first loop through the second one. You have just made a slip stitch back loop only.

45. Make three more slip stitches back loop only in the next three stitches. Fasten off.

Spooky Halloween basket with bats

Materials

Yarn: I use Soft FRAYA Cotton 8/4 100% Organic cotton 50g – 180 m, colors: black and orange. However, any thin cotton yarn will work.
Hook: I use a 2.0 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.

Abbreviations (US terms)

ch: chain
sl st: slip stitch
sc: single crochet
msc: modified single crochet
prev: previous
st: stitch

Notes

The diameter of my basket is 10.0 cm and the height is 5.0 cm (10.0 cm when not folded in).

This pattern uses the tapestry crochet technique (you can find the tutorial here). The photo instructions below show how to make the basket. This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here).

Pattern

Start by making a magic (adjustable) ring with the black yarn.

Round 1: 8 sc in the magic ring. (8 st in total)

Introduce the orange yarn.

Round 2: msc inc in every st. (16 st)

Round 3: *msc inc, 1 msc in the next st*, rep ** 8 times. (24 st)

Round 4: msc; *msc inc, 2 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, msc. (32 st)

Round 5: 2 msc; *msc inc, 3 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, msc. (40 st)

Round 6: 3 msc; *msc inc, 4 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, msc. (48 st)

Round 7: 4 msc; *msc inc, 5 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, msc. (56 st)

Round 8: 5 msc; *msc inc, 6 msc*. rep ** 7 times, msc inc, msc. (64 st)

Round 9: 6 msc; *msc inc, 7 msc*. rep ** 7 times, msc inc, msc. (72 st)

Round 10: 7 msc; *msc inc, 8 msc*. rep ** 7 times, msc inc, msc. (80 st)

Round 11: 8 msc; *msc inc, 9 msc*. rep ** 7 times, msc inc, msc. (88 st)

Round 12: 9 msc; *msc inc, 10 msc*. rep ** 7 times, msc inc, msc. (96 st)

The bottom of the basket is finished.

Round 13-35: msc in every st of the prev round. (96 st)

In the end make 4 additional sl st in the back loop only in the next 4 st to even out the edge. Fasten off. Fold in the sides of the basket.

Color chart

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. In total there are 96 stitches in one round. The chart represents half of the pattern: the first 48 stitches (48 columns in the chart) in a round. Stitches 49-96 are the same as 1-48. Rows represent rounds (there are 35 rounds, however, the first 12 rounds are not shown in the color chart: they are all black and they are the round base of the basket). For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left.

Round 1

1. Start by making a magic ring. Then make 8 single crochets in the magic ring. Tighten the ring by pulling the end of the yarn.

Round 2

2. Don’t make a slip stitch. Instead insert your hook in the top of the first single crochet grabbing just the back loop.

3. Yarn over.

4. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook. In round 2 you have to introduce orange yarn. So, put the orange yarn behind your hook and in front of the black yarn like it is shown in the picture.

5. Then yarn under the black yarn.

6. Pull the yarn through. You have just made a modified single crochet.

7. To make a modified single crochet increase you have to make the second modified single crochet in the same stitch.

8. Continue making single crochet increases in every stitch until the end of the round.

Round 3

9. Make a modified single crochet increase in the first stitch, then make a modified single crochet. Continue following the written pattern.

Round 13

10. Keep following the written pattern until the end of round 13. Don’t complete the last stitch of the round, stop when you have two loops on your hook. The first stitch in round 14 is orange. This means that you have to change yarn color.

11. So, put the orange yarn up.

12. Yarn under the orange yarn.

13. Pull the yarn through. Now your orange yarn is ready to use.

Round 14

14. Continue working with the orange yarn.

Round 15

15. In round 15 make three full modified single crochets with the orange yarn. Then start making the fourth one, but complete it with the black yarn, because the fifth stitch in round 15 is black.

16. Start making the fifth stitch with the black yarn, but stop when you have two loops on your hook. The next stitch is orange, so you have to change yarn color again.

17. So, complete the fifth stitch with the orange yarn.

18. For the rest of the pattern follow the color chart.

Round 35

19. When you reach the end of round 35, you have to even out the edge by making four slip stitches in the back loop only.

20. Now you can put the orange yarn aside. Insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop.

21. Yarn over the black yarn.

22. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

23. Pull the first loop through the second one. You have just made a slip stitch in the back loop only.

24. Make three more slip stitches in the back loop only in the next three stitches. Then fasten off.

25. This is how the basket looks like when the sides are not folded in.

26. Fold in the sides of the basket (the folding line is on round 24). Done!

Materials

In the end make 4 additional sl st in the back loop only in the next 4 st to even out the edge. Fasten off and sew the both sides of the potholder together.

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 104 stitches. The color chart above shows only a half of the pattern: stitches 53-104 of each round (columns 53-104 in the chart). Columns 1-52 are the same as column 53 (rows 1, 2, 42 and 43 are black, the rest of the rows are orange). Rows represent rounds. For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left.

24. Start making the the 73rd stitch with the black yarn, but stop when you have two loops on your hook. Next stitch is orange, so you have to change yarn color again.

25. Complete the 73rd stitch with the orange yarn.

26. Then start making the 74th stitch with the orange yarn, but complete it with the black yarn, because the next stitch is black.

27. Start making the next stitch with the black yarn, but complete it with the orange yarn, because the next stitch is orange.

28. Continue following the color chart until the end of the pattern.

Round 43

29. When you complete round 43, you have to even out the edge by making four slip stitches in the back loop only.

30. So, put the orange yarn aside and insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop.

31. Yarn over.

32. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

33. Pull the first loop through the second one. You have just made a slip stitch back loop only.

34. Make three more slip stitches in the back loop only. Then fasten off and sew both sides of the potholder together.

This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here).
