Drawstring bag with hearts

Materials

  • Yarn: I use Madame Tricot Paris Almina 8/4 mercerized cotton 100% 50 g = 169 m. Colors: 5313 (rose) and 5306 (white). However, any thin cotton yarn will work.
  • Hook: I use a 2.0 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.

Abbreviations (US terms)

Notes

The size my bag is 7.0 x 10.5 cm. You will be working in rounds.

This pattern uses the tapestry crochet technique (you can find the tutorial here). The photo instructions below show the main steps how to make a bag. This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here).

You will work in continuous rounds, which means that in the end of a round you don’t join with a slip stitch, but instead continue making modified single crochets in the top of the first stitch of the round. Remember to use a marker showing the beginning of each round. Follow the color chart showing how you should change colors.

Free pattern: drawstring bag with hearts

Pattern

The bag

Start by chaining 24 with rose yarn.

Round 1: To make the first round, you will work down the chain, then turn and work in the other side of the chain. Make sc in every st of the chain starting from the second chain from your hook. Turn. 1 sc in the end of the chain, make sc in every st (starting with the one you have just worked into; now that st has 3 sc in total) until you come back to the beginning of the chain. 1 sc in the end of the chain. In total you should have 48 st. Don’t join with a sl st, instead continue with the next round.

Now add the white yarn and follow the color chart for all rounds until the end.

Round 2-24: msc in every st of the prev round.

Making the holes for the string:

Round 25: msc, *ch2, skip 2 st of the prev round, 2 msc*, rep ** 11 times. ch 2, skip 2 st of the prev round, msc.

Round 26: msc, *2 msc in the ch2 space of the prev round (make sure to grab the loose yarn hanging in the ch2 space in the prev round too), 2 msc*, rep ** 11 times. 2 msc in the ch2 space of the prev round, msc.

Round 27-31: msc in every st of the prev round.

In the end make 4 additional sl st in the back loop only in the next 4 st to even out the edge. Fasten off.

Making the string

Start by chaining with rose yarn. The length of the chain should be around 25 cm long. Make a row of slip stitches in the third loop of the chain (see the tutorial here). When you reach the end of the row, fasten off. You are ready to weave in the string into your bag. Done!

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 48 stitches (48 columns in the chart). Rows represent rounds. For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left.

In the chart, empty squares indicate where you should make holes for the string. When you chain 2 for a hole, you cannot hide the yarn you are not working with: it will be ‘hanging’ in the hole. Don’t worry, when you will make round 26, you will grab both yarns you need to hide: the one in round 26 and the one in round 25. See photo instructions.

Round 1

1. Start by chaining 24 with rose yarn. You will start working in the second chain from your hook.

2. So, make a single crochet in the second chain from your hook.

3. Keep making single crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

4. Then make one single crochet in the end of the chain.

5. Turn your work and make one more single crochet in the same stitch.

6. Then continue making single crochets in every stitch until you reach the end.

7. Make one single crochet in the end of the chain. In total you should have 48 stitches.

Round 2

8. Don’t join with a slip stitch. Instead insert your hook in the top of the first single crochet of the first round grabbing just the back loop.

9. Yarn over.

10. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook. In round 2 you have to introduce the white yarn. So, take your white yarn and put it behind your hook and in front of the rose yarn like it is shown in the picture.

11. Yarn under the rose yarn.

12. Pull the yarn through. Notice how the white yarn is wrapped around with the rose yarn.

13. Then insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop.

14. Yarn over the rose yarn.

15. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

16. Yarn under the rose yarn.

17. Pull the yarn through. You have just made a modified single crochet.

18. Keep working in the same way until the end of the round. When you make the last modified single crochet, don’t finish it, stop when you have two loops on your hook. The first stitch in round 3 should be white, therefore, you need to change yarn color.

19. So, put the white yarn up and yarn under.

20. Pull the yarn through. Now your white yarn is ready to use.

Round 3

21. Continue making modified single crochets with the white yarn until the end of the round.

Round 4

22. The fourth stitch in round 4 is rose. So, make 2 full modified single crochets in round 4, start making the third one, but stop when you have two loops on your hook.

23. Then put the rose yarn up, yarn under and complete the third modified single crochet with the rose yarn.

24. Start making the fourth stitch with the rose yarn, but don’t complete it, because you have to change color again.

25. So, complete the fourth stitch with the white yarn.

26. Make three modified single crochets with the white yarn, start making the fourth one, but complete it with the rose yarn.

27. Follow the color chart showing how to change colors.

Round 25

28. In round 25 you have to make holes for a string. Make one modified single crochet.

29. Then chain two.

30. Then skip two stitches of the previous round and make two modified single crochets in the next two stitches. You can see that the white yarn is hanging in the hole. That is fine.

31. Chain two, skip two stitches and make two modified single crochets in the next two stitches.

32. Keep working in the same way until the end of the round.

Round 26

33. Make one modified single crochet.

34. Then insert your hook in the chain two space grabbing both white yarns like it is shown in the picture.

35. Yarn over the rose yarn.

36. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

37. Yarn under the rose yarn.

38. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook.

39. Make one more modified single crochet in the chain two space of the previous round.

40. Then make two modified single crochets in the next two stitches.

41. Make two modified single crochets in the next chain two space of the previous round and two modified single crochets in the next two stitches.

42. Continue working in the same way until the end of the round. Remember to finish the last stitch of the round with the white yarn. Notice that the holes are not perfectly aligned, as well as the color pattern, but that is normal when you work in continuous rounds.

Round 31

43. When you are done with round 31, you need to make a few slip stitches to even out the edge.

44. So, leave the white yarn aside and insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop.

45. Yarn over the rose yarn.

46. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

47. Next pull the first loop through the second one. You have just made a slip stitch.

48. Make three more slip stitches in the next three stitches.

Tapestry crochet bookmark with hearts

Materials

  • Yarn: I use Hjertegarn DIAMOND 8/4 mercerized cotton 100% 50 g. Colors: 3803 (light lilac) and 4502 (red). However, any thin cotton yarn will work.
  • Hook: I use a 2.0 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.

Abbreviations (US terms)

Notes

The size my bookmark is 18.0 x 4.0 cm.

After every row you have to cut both yarns. Always work on the same side from right to left (don’t turn your work around). Leave a bit longer ends of yarn in the beginning and in the end of the row (a bit more than 3.0 cm long) so you could cut them even in the end.

All rows, except row 2 and row 10, should be started with light lilac yarn. Row 2 and row 10 should be started and completed with red yarn. Even though some rows are in one color (e.g., row 1, row 2), I suggest introducing the second yarn in these rows too to keep the same thickness of the bookmark. The second yarn in those rows can be any color, because it will be wrapped around and will not be seen. For my bookmark I always use two colors for each row.

This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under. The photo instructions below show how to make the bookmark. Follow the color chart below showing how to change colors. The chain that you make in the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch and it is not shown in the color chart.

Free pattern: Tapestry crochet bookmark with hearts

Pattern

Start by chaining 42 with light lilac yarn.

Row 1: Work in the back of the chain: in the second chain from your hook make a msc, msc in every st until the end of the row. Cut both yarns.

Row 2-11: ch 1, msc in every st until the end of the row. Cut both yarns.

To make the ends of the bookmark look the same, on the right side of the bookmark, insert your hook in the chain that you made in the beginning of each row where it forms a vertical loop and pull the yarn out (see photo instructions). Then straighten the ends of yarn and cut them so that they would be 3.0 cm long on each side.

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each row you have 41 stitches (41 columns in the chart). For each row you have to read the row in the chart from right to left.

Row 1

1. Start by chaining 42 with light lilac yarn. You will start working in the second chain from your hook in the back of the chain.

2. So, insert your hook in the second chain from your hook.

3. Yarn over.

4. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

5. Take your second yarn and put it behind your hook and in front of the lilac yarn (I use red yarn, but in this row you can use another light lilac yarn because all stitches in this row are light lilac). The end of the red yarn should be more than 3.0 cm long.

6. Then yarn under the light lilac yarn.

7. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made a modified single crochet.

8. Then make the second modified single crochet in the next stitch: insert your hook like it is shown in the picture. The red yarn should be in front of your hook.

9. Yarn over the light lilac yarn.

10. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

11. Yarn under.

12. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook.

13. Continue making modified single crochets until the end of the row.

14. Then cut both yarns leaving ends that are more than 3.0 cm long. Pull out the light lilac yarn.

Row 2

15. To start the second row, don’t turn your work around. You will work from right to left again. Insert your hook in the chain of the previous row.

16. The second row is red, therefore, take the red yarn and make a chain. Then put the light lilac yarn behind your hook and in front of the red yarn.

17. Yarn over the red yarn.

18. Pull the yarn through. Now the light lilac yarn is secured.

19. Then make a modified single crochet (work in the back loop only) in the next stitch.

20. Make modified single crochets with the red yarn until the end of the row. Then cut both yarns.

Row 3

21. For the rest of the pattern work in the same way: start the row by making a chain in the chain of the previous row. Row 3 starts with the light lilac stitch, so make a chain with the light lilac yarn.

22. Then take the red yarn and secure it by making a chain with the light lilac yarn like before.

23. Keep making modified single crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

Row 4

24. In row 4, you have to change yarn color in the same row because the 11th stitch should be red. So, chain one in the beginning of the row and secure the red yarn (it does not count as a stitch), then make 9 full modified single crochets with the light lilac yarn.

25. Then start making the 10th modified single crochet, but stop when you have two loops on your hook.

26. Then put the red yarn up and yarn under.

27. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. Now the red yarn is ready to be used.

28. Make one full modified single crochet with the red yarn, start making the second one, but stop when you have two loops on your hook. The 13th stitch should be light lilac, therefore, you have to change yarn color.

29. Put the light lilac yarn up and complete the 12th stitch with the light lilac yarn.

30. Start making the 13th stitch with the light lilac yarn, but stop when you have two loops on your hook, because next stitch should be red.

31. So, complete the 13th stitch with the red yarn.

32. For the rest of the pattern work in the same way and follow the color chart.

Finishing up

33. When you complete the bookmark, the right side will be slightly different: it will have a vertical line of loops formed by the chains that were made in the beginning of each row. To made the sides look the same, insert your hook in vertical loops like it is shown in the picture and pull them out. All ends will stay secured.

34. Straighten all yarn ends and cut them even to be around 3.0 cm long. Done!

The size of my bag is 6.5 x 9.0 cm. You will be working in rounds. This pattern uses the tapestry crochet technique (you can find the tutorial here). The photo instructions below show how to make a bag and a string. This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here). Except for the first round and the two rounds where you make holes for a string, every round is made in the same way: chain one, make 39 modified single crochets, join with a slip stitch.

Alternatively, you can work in continuous rounds, which means that in the end of a round you don’t join with a sl st, but instead continue making msc in the top of the first st of the round. Remember to use a marker showing the beginning of each row. Follow the color chart showing how you should change colors.

Pattern

The bag

Start by chaining 20 with linen yarn.

Round 1: To make the first round, you will be working down the chain, then turn and work in the other side of the chain. Make sc in every st of the chain starting from the second chain from your hook. Turn. 1 sc in the end of the chain, make sc in every st (starting with the one you have just worked into; now that st has 3 sc in total) until you come back to the beginning of the chain. 1 sc in the end of the chain. Join with a sl st to the first sc of this round (in all other rounds you will join with a sl st to the ch 1). In total you should have 40 st.

Now add the red yarn and follow the color chart for all rounds until the end.

Round 2-18: ch 1, msc in every st of the prev round. Join with a sl st.

Making the holes for the string:

Round 19: ch 1, msc in the next st *ch2, skip 2 st of the prev round, 2 msc*, rep ** 9 times, ch 2, skip 2 st of the prev round, join with a sl st.

Round 20: ch 1, msc in the next st *2 msc in the ch2 space of the prev round (make sure to grab the loose yarn hanging in the ch2 space in the prev round too), 2 msc*, rep ** 9 times, 2 msc in the ch2 space of the prev round, join with a sl st.

Round 21-24: ch 1, msc in every st of the prev round. Join with a sl st.

Fasten off.

Making the string

Start by chaining. The length of the chain should be around 20-21 cm long. Make a row of slip stitches in the third loop of the chain as it is shown in the photo instructions below. When you reach the end of the row, fasten off. You are ready to weave in the string into your bag.

Color chart

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 40 stitches (40 columns in the chart). Rows represent rounds. For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left. The chain that you make in the beginning of each round counts a stitch (except in the first round).

In the chart, dark gray squares indicate where you should make holes for the string. When you chain 2 for a hole, you cannot hide the yarn you are not working with: it will be ‘hanging’ in the hole. Don’t worry, when you will make round 20, you will grab both yarns you need to hide: the one in round 20 and the one in round 19. See photo instructions.

Making the bag

Round 1

1. Chain 20.

2. Make a single crochet in the second chain from your hook.

3. Keep making single crochets until you reach the end of the chain.

4. Make one single crochet in the end of the chain.

5. Then make one more single crochet in the same stitch.

6. Next make single crochets on the other side of the chain.

7. Make one single crochet in the end of the chain.

8. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet of this round. You join to the first single crochet only in this first round, in other rounds join to the chain that you make in the beginning of each round. That chain will count as a stitch.

Round 2

9. Now put the red yarn behind the hook and in front of the linen yarn like it is shown in the picture.

10. Chain one. Now the red yarn is secured (notice that it is wrapped around with the linen yarn).

11. Insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop like it shown in the picture.

12. Yarn over the linen yarn.

13. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

14. Next, instead of yarning over, yarn under like it is shown in the picture.

15. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made a modified single crochet. Notice that the red yarn is wrapped around with the linen yarn.

16. Make modified single crochets until the end of the round.

17. Next insert your hook in the chain that you made in the beginning of the round. Leave the red yarn aside like it is shown in the picture.

18. Yarn over the linen yarn and make a slip stitch.

Round 3

19. Then bring the red yarn back and make modified single crochets as it was shown before.

Round 4

20. In round 4 you have to change color because the 30th stitch in round 4 is red. Make 28 stitches with the linen yarn. Start making the 29th stitch and stop when you have two loops on your hook.

21. Then put the red yarn up like it is shown in the picture.

22. Yarn under the red yarn.

23. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. Now the red yarn is ready to use.

24. Start making the 30th stitch with the red yarn and stop when you have two loops on your hook. The next stitch is linen, therefore you need to change color again.

25. So, put the linen yarn up and yarn under.

26. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. The linen yarn is ready to use.

Round 19

27. In round 19 you have to make holes for a string. So, chain one and make one modified single crochet.

28. Then chain two.

29. Skip the next two stitches and make two modified single crochets in the next two stitches. Notice that the red yarn is “hanging” in the hole, that is fine.

30. Continue making holes until the end of the round. In the end chain two.

31. Skip two last stitches and join with a slip stitch to the chain that you made in the beginning of this round.

Round 20

32. Next chain one and make one modified single crochet.

33. Then insert your hook in the chain two space of the previous round. You should grab both red yarns: from round 20 and from round 19.

34. Yarn over the linen yarn and pull it through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

35. Yarn under and pull the yarn through both loops.

36. Make one more modified single crochet in the same chain two space, then make two modified single crochets in the next two stitches. Continue working in the same way until the end of the round.

Making the string

1. Start with a chain.

2. Now you will be working in the third loop of your chain which is behind ‘v’.

3. Insert your hook in the third loop of the chain and yarn over.

4. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

5. Pull the first loop through the other one. Now you have one loop on your hook. You have just made your first slip stitch.

6. In the photo you can see that after several stitches it starts looking like two chains stuck together. Continue making slip stitches in the third loop of the chain until the end of the row. Fasten off. Done!

]]> Here is a free crochet pattern for a small heart. It is a great quick project for Valentine’s Day. The pattern has motifs similar to my previous heart (you can take a look at the pattern here), but instead of a square in the center, it has a circle, which resembles the treble crochets that are on the sides. Also, this heart is a bit bigger and requires a couple more stitches.

I think that both hearts look pretty good together, so if you would like to hang them together or make a garland of hearts, it would definitely work.

Heart 2

Materials

  • Yarn: I used grey Madame tricote Almina 8/4 100% cotton yarn 50 g. However, any thin cotton yarn will work.
  • Hook: I use a 2.0 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.

Abbreviations (US terms)

Notes

The size of the heart is 6.0 x 5.5 cm. You will be working in rounds. Depending on how tight your stitches are, in the last round you might find it better to make 3 sc in ch1 spaces between the trc instead of 2 sc.

Pattern

Start by making an adjustable (magic) ring.

Round 1: ch 4; *dc in the magic ring, ch 1*, rep ** 11 times, join with a sl st.

Round 2: ch 1, sc in the ch1 space of the prev rnd; *2 sc in the ch1 space of the prev rnd*, rep ** 11 times, join with a sl st.

Round 3: ch 1; *hdc in the next st, dc inc, hdc, 3 sc*, rep ** 3 times. Hdc in the next st, dc inc, hdc, 2 sc, join with a sl st.

Round 4: 

  • ch 1, sc in the hdc of the prev rnd, sc in the next st, ch 1.
  • Skip 3 stitches of the prev rnd and work in the fourth stitch: *trc, ch1*, rep ** 7 times (all in the fourth stitch). Skip 3 stitches of the prev rnd and make a sl st (in between the two dc of the prev rnd), ch 1.
  • Skip 3 stitches of the prev rnd (the second dc of the dc inc, hdc and sc) and work in the fourth stitch: *trc, ch1*, rep ** 7 times (all in the fourth stitch).
  • Skip 3 stitches of the prev rnd, make a sc in the second dc of the dc inc of the prev rnd, 5 sc in the next 5 st, make 2 sc inc in the two following stitches (one in each dc of the dc inc of the prev rnd), 3 sc in the next 3 stitches, join with a sl st.

Round 5: 

  • ch 1, 2 sc in the next 2 stitches; *2 sc in the ch1 space of the prev rnd skipping the trc*, rep ** 7 times. Sl st in the ch1 space, sl st in the next ch1 space. *2 sc in the ch1 space of the prev rnd skipping the trc*, rep ** 7 times.
  • 7 sc in the next 7 stitches. 2 sc inc in the 2 following stitches, 4 sc in the next 4 stitches, join with a sl st.

]]> Here is a free crochet pattern for a cute heart. It is really fast to make, so it won’t take long even if you would like to crochet several of them. I made my heart in one color, but you are free to experiment. I think it would look nice too if the last round were in a different color; then it would have a more defined edge.

This pattern requires only a few simple stitches. Perhaps a treble crochet might seem a bit more complicated (if you have never done it before, you can check this tutorial), but in general, the project is suitable for beginners.

  • ch 1, 3 sc in the next 3 st of the prev rnd; *1 sc in the trc of the prev rnd, 2 sc in the ch1 space of the prev rnd*, rep ** 5 times. 3 sl st in the next 3 st of the prev rnd; *2 sc in the ch1 space of the prev rnd, 1 sc in the trc of the prev rnd*, rep ** 5 times.
  • 6 sc in the next 6 st of the prev rnd. In the ch2 space of the prev rnd: 1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc. Then make 2 sc in the next 2 st of the prev rnd. Join with a sl st.
