Heart

Valentine’s day is slowly approaching. Have you started thinking about how you could surprise your significant other this year? In this post I want to share a free pattern for a simple heart. It is really fast to make, so it won’t take long if you would like to crochet several of them. I made my heart in one color, but you are free to experiment. I think that it would look nice too if the last round would be in a different color: then it would have a more defined edge.

This pattern requires only a few simple stitches. Perhaps relatively more complicated might be a treble crochet (if you have never done it before, you can check this tutorial), but in general the project is surely suitable for beginners.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used gray and peach Madame tricote Almina 8/4 100% cotton yarn 50 g
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 1.5.

Abbreviations (US terms)

Notes

You will be working in rounds. The size of the heart is 5.5 x 5.0 cm.

Pattern

Start by making an adjustable (magic) ring.

Round 1: ch 3, 1 dc in the magic ring, ch 4; *2 dc in the magic ring, ch 4*, rep ** 3 times, join with a slip stitch.

Round 2: ch 1, 1 sc in the dc of the prev rnd, 4 sc in the ch4 space of the prev rnd; *2 sc in each dc of the prev rnd, 4 sc in the ch4 space of the prev rnd*, rep ** 3 times, join with a sl st.

Round 3:

  • ch 1, 3 sc in the 3 sc of the prev rnd, skip the next 3 sc of the prev rnd and make all the following stitches in the fourth sc: 1 trc, *ch 1, 1 trc*, rep ** 5 times.
  • Skip 2 sc of the prev rnd and make a sl st in the third sc of the prev rnd.
  • Skip 2 sc of the prev rnd and make all the following stitches in the third sc: 1 trc, *ch 1, 1 trc*, rep ** 5 times.
  • Skip 2 sc of the prev rnd, make 6 sc in 6 sc of the prev rnd, ch 2, 2 sc in the next two st of the prev rnd, join with a sl st.

Round 4:

  • ch 1, 3 sc in the next 3 st of the prev rnd; *1 sc in the trc of the prev rnd, 2 sc in the ch1 space of the prev rnd*, rep ** 5 times. 3 sl st in the next 3 st of the prev rnd; *2 sc in the ch1 space of the prev rnd, 1 sc in the trc of the prev rnd*, rep ** 5 times.
  • 6 sc in the next 6 st of the prev rnd. In the ch2 space of the prev rnd: 1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc. Then make 2 sc in the next 2 st of the prev rnd. Join with a sl st.

Enjoy your heart!

Love this! I used medium yarn and a bigger hook just because it’s what I had, and it came out great! I’m excited to try some more of your creations.

I was at a retreat for a week and crocheted these up quickly for my new friends. They loved them! Thank you for a very sweet pattern. Now I see there is another one for me to try!
