Day 1: Cutlery holder with diamonds

I am very happy to present the first pattern of my new Christmas Tales collection: a cutlery holder with diamonds. It is very fast to make, so you can make a few of them in no time!

This post is a part of the Nordic Hook Advent calendar. From December 1 to December 24 I will be posting one free Christmas crochet pattern per day. So stay tuned! 😉

You can find other Christmas Tales collection patterns here.

If you would like to have the whole collection as a book in PDF format right now (and to support me 🙂 ), you can purchase it here.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work (mercerized cotton works great in tapestry crochet projects). I used Tencel 100% lyocell, 50 g = 141 m, colors: green (318288) and white (318290)..
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0 mm.

Notes

The size my cutlery holder is 8.0 x 4.3 cm. You will be working in rounds. For this pattern you should be familiar with the tapestry crochet (you can find the tutorial here). Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make a cutlery holder. This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here).

For this pattern you will work in continuous rounds, which means that in the end of a round you don’t join with a slip stitch, but instead continue making modified single crochets in the top of the first stitch of the round. Remember to use a marker showing the beginning of each round. Follow the color chart showing how you should change colors.

Pattern

Start by chaining 49 with green yarn. Join with a sl st to the beginning of the chain. Make sure that the chain is not twisted.

Round 1: ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc in every st in the back of the chain until the end of the round. (In the second round you will start working in the top of the first sc). (48 st in total)

Introduce the white yarn.

Round 2-11: msc in every st of the prev round. (48 st)

Even out the edge and fasten off.

Color chart

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 48 stitches (48 columns in the chart). Rows represent rounds. For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left.

Photo instructions for the cutlery holder with diamonds

Round 1

1. Start by making a chain.

2. Next you have to join the chain to its beginning. Make sure it is not twisted and then insert your hook in the first chain of the long chain.

3. Yarn over and pull the yarn through to make a slip stitch.

4. Then chain one. It does not count as a stitch.

5. Next make a single crochet in the next stitch in the back of the chain.

6. Keep making single crochets until the end of the round. When you will get close to the end, it might seem that the chain is twisted, but as you are working in the back of the chain, this is fine.

7. Start making the last single crochet of this round, but stop when you have two loops on your hook. It is also a good idea to count stitches at this point.

8. The first stitch in the second round should be white. So, take your white yarn and yarn over.

9. Pull the white yarn through both loops on your hook. Now the white yarn is ready to be used.

Round 2

10. Then insert your hook in the top of the first single crochet of the first round grabbing just the back loop. The green yarn should be in front of your hook.

11. Yarn over the white yarn.

12. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook. Then yarn under.

13. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made a modified single crochet. Remember to put a marker in the first stitch of the round and continue following the color chart.

Round 3

14. The first stitch in round 4 should be white, so complete the last stitch in round 3 with the white yarn.

Round 4

15. Start making the first stitch in round 4 with the white yarn, but stop when you have two loops on your hook. Then put the green yarn up and finish the stitch with the green yarn, because the next stitch should be green.

16. Keep following the color chart.

Round 8

17. After a while the cutlery holder will look like this.

Finishing up

18. Complete the cutlery holder by evening out the edge: in the next 4 stitches make 4 slip stitches in the back of the loop.

19. Done!

Enjoy your cutlery holder with diamonds!
