Coasters and table mats

Feather stitch coaster

Here is another very quick project and a free pattern for a feather stitch coaster. The feather stitch has a really nice texture and the fabric is quite thick, so it is perfect for a coaster. However, have in mind that the feather stitch uses quite some yarn.

You can also take a look at my other patterns for coasters here.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Järbo 8/4 100% Cotton “Mercerized & Gassed” 50 g (color: linen).
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0.

Notes

The size of my coaster is 9.5 x 9.5 cm. You will be working in rows. This pattern uses the feather stitch. Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make this stitch. It consists of chains, half double crochets and feather stitches. It is a repeat of one row.

Pattern

Start by chaining 26 (you can adjust the size by chaining more or less, just make sure that you have an even number of chains).

Row 1: In the second chain from your hook make a hdc (in the back of the chain). Then make hdcs in every st until the end of the row.

Row 2: ch 1, skip one st, ch 1, *hdc in the next st, skip one st, ch 1*, rep * * until the end of the row. Finish the row with hdc.

Row 3: ch 1, hdc in the very first st, fs (slightly different for row 3, see photo instructions) until the end of the row. Finish the row with hdc.

Row 4: ch 1, hdc in the very first st, fs until the end of the row. Finish the row with hdc.

Row 5-18: repeat row 4.

Row 19: ch 1, hdc in the very first st, *hdc in the ch1 space, hdc in the fs*, rep ** until the end of the row. Finish the row with hdc in the last st.

Fasten off.

Photo instructions for a feather stitch coaster

Row 1

1. Start by making a chain which would have an even number of chains. I chained 26.

2. Now you will have to make a half double crochet. So, yarn over and insert your hook in the second chain from your hook (in the back of the chain).

3. Yarn over and pull the yarn through. Now your have three loops on your hook.

4. Yarn over and pull the yarn through all three loops.

5. Make half double crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

Row 2

6. Chain one and turn your work around. Now you will have to work in the very first stitch like it is shown in the picture.

7. So, make a half double crochet in the first stitch.

8. Chain one.

9. Skip one stitch and make a half double crochet.

10. Then chain one, skip one stitch and make a half double crochet.

11. Keep working in the same way until the end of the row.

Row 3

12. Chain one and turn your work around. You will have to work in the very first stitch like it is shown in the picture.

13. So, make a half double crochet in the very first stitch.

14. Chain one. Now you will make a feather stitch. You will have to work in the chain one space, then in the half double crochet that is under the chain one space, and in the next chain one space like it is shown in the picture.

15. So, yarn over, insert your hook in the chain one space, yarn over and pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

20. Yarn over.

21. Pull the yarn through all seven loops.

22. Then chain one. You have just made a feather stitch.

23. To make the next feather stitch, you will work in the chain one space where you have just worked in, the half double crochet that is under that chain one space, and the next chain one space like it is shown in the picture. So, yarn over.

24. Then insert your hook in the same chain one space where you have just worked in, yarn over and pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook. Next you will have to work in the half double crochet that is under the chain one space.

25. So, yarn over, insert your hook in the half double crochet under the chain one space, yarn over and pull the yarn through. Now you have five loops on your hook. Next you will work in the next chain one space.

Row 4

30. Chain one and turn your work around.

31. Then make a half double crochet in the very first stitch.

32. Chain one. Now you will have to make a feather stitch. You will have to work in the chain one space, then in the chain one space that is below, and then in the next chain one space like it is shown in the picture.

33. So, yarn over and insert your hook in the chain one space.

34. Yarn over and pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook. Next you will have to work in the chain one space that is below the chain one space that you have just worked in.

35. So, yarn over and insert your hook in the chain one space that is below, yarn over and pull the yarn through. Now you have five loops on your hook. Next you will have to work in the next chain one space.

36. So, yarn over, insert your hook in the next one space, yarn over and pull the yarn through. Now you have seven loops on your hook.

37. Yarn over and pull the yarn through all seven loops.

38. Chain one. To make the next feather stitch, you will have to work in the same chain one space where you have just worked in, the chain one space that is below, and the next chain one space like it is shown in the picture.

39. Keep working in the same way until the end of the row. Then make a half double crochet in the last stitch of the row.

40. For the rest of the pattern until row 19 repeat row 4.

Row 19

41. Chain one. This is the last row of the coaster which consists of half double crochets.

42. So, make a half double crochet in the very first stitch.

43. Then make a half double crochet in the feather stitch.
