Tapestry crochet drawstring bag with a sailboat

Here is a free crochet pattern for a tapestry crochet drawstring bag with a sailboat. Since it is summer, I decided to continue with the marine theme (I made a tapestry crochet bag with an anchor a few weeks ago) and create a pattern with a sailboat.

Initially I thought that I will use it for my sunglasses, but now I think that it will be perfect for my crochet hooks to bring with me. I really like how it turned out and I hope that you will like it too 🙂

You can find my other tapestry crochet drawstring bag patterns here.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Strik & Smil “Art silk garn”, 100% viscose, 50 g (~140m), colors: white and blue.
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0.

Notes

The size of my bag is 7.0 x 18.5 cm. You will be working in rounds. For this pattern you should be familiar with the tapestry crochet (you can find the tutorial here). Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make a bag and a string. This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here).

For this pattern you can work in continuous rounds, which means that in the end of a round you don’t join with a sl st, but instead continue making msc in the top of the first st of the prev round. Remember to use a marker showing the beginning of each round. Follow the color chart showing how you should change colors.

Pattern

The bag

Start by chaining 20 with your blue yarn.

Round 1: To make the first round, you will be working down the chain, then turn and work in the other side of the chain. Make sc in every st of the chain starting from the second chain from your hook. Turn. 1 sc in the end of the chain, make sc in every st (starting with the one you have just worked into; now that st has 3 sc in total) until you come back to the beginning of the chain. 1 sc in the end of the chain. Don’t join with a sl st. In total you should have 40 st.

Now add the white yarn and follow the color chart for all rounds until the end.

Round 2-39: msc in every st of the prev round.

Making the holes for the string:

Round 40: 2 msc, *ch2, skip 2 st of the prev round, 2 msc*, rep ** 9 times, ch 2, skip 2 st of the prev round. Continue working with round 41.

Round 41: 2 msc, *2 msc in the ch2 space of the prev round (make sure to grab the loose yarn hanging in the ch2 space in the prev round too), 2 msc*, rep ** 9 times, 2 msc in the ch2 space of the prev round. Continue working with round 42.

Round 42-45: msc in every st of the prev round. Finish up by making 4 additional sl st to even out the edge.

Fasten off.

Making the string

Start by chaining. The length of the chain should be around 26-27 cm long. Make a row of slip stitches in the third loop of the chain as it is shown in photo instructions below. When you reach the end of the row, fasten off. You are ready to weave in the string into your bag. Done!

Color chart

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 40 stitches (40 columns in the chart). Rows represent rounds. For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left.

In the chart, red squares indicate where you should make holes for the string. When you chain 2 for a hole, you cannot hide the yarn you are not working with: it will be ‘hanging’ in the hole. Don’t worry, when you will make round 41, you will grab both yarns you need to hide: the one in round 41 and the one in round 40. See photo instructions.

Photo instructions for the tapestry crochet drawstring bag with a sailboat

Making the bag

Round 1

1. Start by chaining 20.

2. Make a single crochet in the second chain from your hook.

3. Continue making single crochets until the end of the chain.

4. Then make one single crochet in the end of the chain.

5. Turn your work and make one more single crochet in the same stitch.

6. Then continue making single crochets in every stitch until you reach the end.

7. Make one single crochet in the end of the chain. In total you should have 40 stitches.

Round 2

8. Don’t join with a slip stitch. Instead insert your hook in the top of the first stitch of the previous round grabbing just the back loop. Then yarn over.

9. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook. Next put the white yarn behind your hook and in front of the blue yarn like it is shown in the picture.

10. Then yarn under the blue yarn.

11. Pull the yarn through both loops. Now the white yarn is secured (notice how it is wrapped around with the blue yarn).

12. Then insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop like it is shown in the picture and yarn over.

13. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook. Then yarn under.

14. Pull the yarn through both loops. You have just made a modified single crochet. Remember to put your marker in the first stitch of the round.

15. Make modified single crochets until the end of the round.

Round 3

16. Don’t join with a slip stitch, just continue working in the top of the next stitch.

Round 7

17. In round 7 you have to change yarn color because the 25h stitch should be white. So, make 23 full modified single crochets with the blue yarn.

18. Start making the 24th modified single crochet but don’t finish it, stop when you have two loops on your hook.

19. Then put your white yarn up like it is shown in the picture and yarn under.

20. Pull the white yarn through both loops on your hook. Now your white yarn is ready to use.

21. Then make 9 full modified single crochets with the white yarn, start making the 10th modified single crochet, but stop when you have two loops on your hook.

22. Then put the blue yarn up, yarn under and pull the blue yarn through both loops on your hook. The blue yarn is ready to use again. Continue to follow the color chart and change colors accordingly.

Round 40

23. In round 40 you have to make holes for the string. So, make two modified single crochets.

24. Then chain two.

25. Skip two stitches and make two modified single crochet in the next two stitches.

26. Then chain two, skip two stitches and make two modified single crochets in the next two stitches. Continue working in the same way until the end of the round.

Round 41

27. You have finished round 40 with two chains and skipped two stitches. Then make two modified single crochets in the next two stitches.

28. Now you will have to make a modified single crochet in the chain two space of the previous round. So, insert your hook in the chain two space of the previous round grabbing both white yarns like it is shown in the picture.

29. Yarn over and pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

30. Then yarn under.

31. Pull the yarn through.

32. Then make one more modified single crochet in the same chain two space. Next make two modified single crochets in the next two stitches. Keep working in the same way until the end of the round.

Round 45

33. In the end of round 45 you should make a few slip stitches to even out the edge. So, insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing the the back loop and yarn over (leave the white yarn aside).

34. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

35. Then pull the loop that you have just made through the first loop on your hook. You have just made a slip stitch.

36. Then make three more slip stitches in the next three stitches.
