Cross stitch pouch

Here is a free crochet pattern for a cross stitch pouch with a zipper. I really enjoy making pouches and bags because they are useful in everyday life and do not lie forgotten somewhere in a box. You can use them for coins, cards, make-up, headphones, USBs and all those tiny things that sometimes get scattered around.

The pattern includes a list of materials, abbreviations, notes, and a written pattern. For this pattern I combined two stitches: half double crochet and cross stitch double crochet (see the tutorial here). They are easy to make; therefore, this project is suitable for beginners. If you would like to practice cross stitch more, you can also check my cross stitch dishcloth and cross stitch Christmas tree. For this pouch I chose two colors, grey and peach, which, in my opinion, go pretty well together. But if you would like to make it in one color, it should look great too: it has some texture, so it won’t look plain.

Cross stitch pouch

Materials

  • Yarn: I used Madame tricote Almina 8/4 100% cotton yarn 50 g (grey and peach). However, any thin cotton yarn will work.
  • Hook: I use a 1.5 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.
  • A zipper and lining (if you wish to attach it).

Abbreviations (US terms)

Notes

You will be working in rounds. The size of my pouch is 15.5 x 10.5 cm. You can adjust the width of the pouch by choosing the length of your chain: chain until you reach the desired width of your pouch. Similarly, you can make any number of rows until you reach the desired height of the pouch. You will start by making a chain and then you will crochet around it to make the first round (you can take a look at the photo tutorial how to do that here). To keep the line where you join each round with a sl st straight, alternate where you make your first st of the round: in the first st of the prev round or in the second stitch. Remember that each round must contain the same number of stitches.

Pattern

Start with gray yarn and chain any number of chains until you reach the desired length (the width of the pouch) + 1. For my pouch I chained 42 + 1.

Round 1: You will be working down the chain, then turn and work in the other side of the chain. Make sc in every st of the chain starting from the second chain from your hook. Turn. 1 sc in the end of the chain, make sc in every st until you come back to the beginning of the chain. 1 sc in the end of the chain. Join with a sl st to close the round.

Round 2: ch 2, hdc in every st of the prev round, join with a sl st.

Round 3-4: repeat round 2.

Change to peach yarn.

Round 5: ch 2, hdc-3lo in every st of the prev round, join with a sl st.

Round 6: ch 3, cross-st-dc in every st of the prev round, join with a sl st.

Round 7: ch 2, hdc in every st of the prev round, join with a sl st.

Change to gray yarn.

Round 8-10: repeat rounds 5-6.

Change to peach yarn.

Round 11-13: repeat rounds 5-6.

Change to gray yarn.

Round 14-16: repeat rounds 5-6.

Change to peach yarn.

Round 17-19: repeat rounds 5-6.

Change to gray yarn.

Round 20: repeat round 5.

Round 21-23: repeat round 2.

Fasten off. Sew in a zipper.

Enjoy your pouch!
