Simple crochet coaster Suzette

Here is a free crochet pattern for a simple crochet coaster Suzette. It is a great project for beginners because you only need to have knowledge of some basic crochet: how to make a chain, a single crochet and a double crochet. I think that the texture of this coaster is really nice. I made it using one color only, but you could experiment and make it, for example, in stripes.

I hope that you will like this simple coaster 🙂

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Järbo 8/4 100% Cotton “Mercerized & Gassed” 50 g (skyblue ombré).
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0.

Notes

The size of my coaster is 8.5 x 8.0 cm. You will be working in rows. This pattern uses the Suzette stitch. Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make this stitch. It consists of single and double crochets. This stitch is reversible, so the coaster looks great from both sides.

Pattern

Start by chaining 23 (you can adjust the size by chaining more or less, just make sure that you have an odd number of chains).

Row 1: In the second chain from your hook make a sc. Then make a dc in the same stitch. *Skip one stitch and make a sc and then a dc in the same stitch*, rep * * until you have two stitches left. In the last stitch of the row make one sc.

Row 2-21: ch 1, then make a sc in the very first st and a dc in the same st. *Skip one stitch and make a sc and then a dc in the same stitch*, rep * * until you have two stitches left. To finish the row, skip one stitch and make one single crochet.

Fasten off.

Photo instructions

Row 1

1. Start with an odd number of chains. I chained 23. You will start working in the second chain from your hook in the back of the chain like it is shown in the picture.

2. So, make a single crochet in the second chain from your hook.

3. Then make a double crochet in the same stitch.

4. Skip the next stitch and make a single crochet.

5. Make a double crochet in the same stitch. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row: skip one stitch, make a single crochet, then make a double crochet in the same stitch.

6. When you reach the end of the row, make one single crochet.

Row 2

7. Then chain one.

8. Turn your work around. Now you will be working in the very first stitch (the last single crochet of the previous row), like it is shown in the picture.

9. So, make one single crochet.

10. Then make a double crochet in the same stitch.

11. Skip one stitch and make a single crochet.

12. Make a double crochet in the same stitch.

13. Keep working in the same way until the end of the row.

14. To finish the row, skip one stitch and make one single crochet.

15. For rows 3-21 repeat row 2. Done!

Thank you for this wonderfully simple yet attractive stitch. I’m going to make some table mats to go with the coasters.

This is a great idea! Table mats should look really nice using this stitch.
