Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used DIAMOND mercerized cotton 100% 8/4 50g. Colors: 100 (white) and 3803 (light lilac).
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0.

Abbreviations (US terms)

Notes

The diameter of my basket is 10.5 and the height is 5.0 cm (10.0 cm not folded).

For this pattern you should be familiar with the tapestry crochet (you can find the tutorial here). Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make a basket. This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here).

You will work in continuous rounds, which means that in the end of a round you don’t join with a slip stitch, but instead continue making modified single crochets in the top of the first stitch of the round. Remember to use a marker showing the beginning of each round. Follow the color chart showing how you should change colors.

Color chart

Color chart: Tapestry crochet basket Isabella

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. Starting from round 14, in each round you have 104 stitches (52 columns in the chart represent a half of the full pattern). Rows represent rounds. First 13 rounds are the bottom of the basket and they are all light lilac. The color chart starts from round 14. For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left. Just repeat columns 1-26 to get the full pattern for 104 stitches in a round.

5. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook. Take the white yarn and put it behind your hook and in front of the lilac yarn.

6. Then yarn under the lilac yarn.

7. Pull the yarn through. You have just made a modified single crochet.

9. Yarn over.

10. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

11. Yarn under the lilac yarn.

12. Pull the yarn through. Notice how the white yarn is wrapped around with the lilac yarn. Remember to mark the first stitch of the round.

13. Keep following the written pattern.

Round 13

14. Round 14 starts with a white stitch, therefore you have to change yarn color in the end of round 13. So, don’t complete the last stitch in round 13, stop when you have two loops on your hook.

15. Then put the white yarn up.

16. Yarn under the white yarn.

17. Pull the yarn through. Now the white yarn is ready to use.

Round 13

18. Keep working in the same way with the white yarn.

20. So, put the lilac yarn up, yarn under the lilac yarn and pull the yarn through. Now the lilac yarn is ready to use.

Round 16

21. The third stitch in round 16 is lilac. So, make the first stitch with the white yarn, start making the second stitch with the white yarn, but don’t complete it because the next stitch should be lilac.

22. So, complete the stitch with the lilac yarn.

23. Then make one full modified single crochet with the lilac yarn, start the second one, but stop when you have two loops on your hook.

24. Complete it with the white yarn.

25. Start making the 5th stitch in this round with the white yarn, but stop when you have two loops on your hook. The next stitch is lilac, so you have to change color.

26. So, complete the 5th stitch with the lilac yarn.

27. Continue to follow the color chart.

Round 37

28. At the end of round 37 you have to make 4 slip stiches in the back loop only. So, put the white yarn aside, insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop and yarn over the lilac yarn.

29. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

30. Then pull the first loop through the second one. You have just made a slip stitch in the back loop only. Then make three more slip stitches in the back loop only in the next three stitches.
