Tapestry crochet basket Meander

Here is a new free pattern for a cute tapestry crochet basket with a meander ornament. I really enjoyed making my tapestry crochet basket Wave, therefore I thought that I could try to make a smaller version with a different color pattern.

It is quite easy and quick to make. If you haven’t tried tapestry crochet before, you can find out more about this crochet technique here.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Strik & smil “Art silk garn”, 100% viscose, 50 g (white and blue).
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0.

Notes

The diameter of my basket is 8.5 cm, height is 3.5 cm (7.0 cm not folded). You will be working in rounds. For this pattern you should be familiar with the tapestry crochet (you can find the tutorial here). Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make a basket. This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here).

To make a modified single crochet increase you need to make two modified single crochets in the same stitch. For this pattern you can work in continuous rounds, which means that in the end of a round you don’t join with a slip stitch, but instead continue making msc in the top of the first stitch of the round. Remember to use a marker showing the beginning of each round. Follow the color chart showing how you should change colors. This basket will not be very firm if you will be working with relatively thin yarn like me.

Pattern

Start by making a magic (adjustable) ring with your blue yarn. You will not need your white yarn until round 10.

Round 1: 8 sc in the magic ring. (8 st in total)

Round 2: msc inc in every st. (16 st)

Round 3: *msc inc, 1 msc in the next st*, rep ** 8 times. (24 st)

Round 4: msc; *msc inc, 2 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, 1 msc. (32 st)

Round 5: 2 msc; *msc inc, 3 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, msc. (40 st)

Round 6: msc; *msc inc, 4 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, 3 msc. (48 st)

Round 7: 4 msc; *msc inc, 5 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, msc. (56 st)

Round 8: msc; *msc inc, 6 msc*. rep ** 7 times, msc inc, 5 msc. (64 st)

Round 9: 5 msc, *msc inc, 7 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc. 2 msc. (72 st)

The bottom of the basket is finished. Introduce your white yarn.

Round 10-27: msc in every st of the prev round. (72 st)

In the end make 3 additional sl st in the next 3 st “to even out” the edge. Fasten off. Fold the edge of the basket inside.

Color chart

Color chart Tapestry crochet basket Meander

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 72 stitches (the 40 columns in the chart represent the first 40 stitches in each round). Rows represent rounds. The first 9 rounds are the bottom of the basket and the color chart starts from round 10. For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left. Just repeat columns 1-8 to get the full pattern for 72 stitches in a round.

Rules for changing color

The last msc of the round

Finish making your last msc of the round with the same color yarn as the first st of the next round. For example, round 10 ends with a blue st and round 11 starts with a white st, Therefore, finish the last st of round 10 with the white yarn.

See photo instructions below showing how to change color.

Photo instructions for a tapestry crochet basket Meander

Round 1

1. Start by making a magic ring. Then make 8 single crochets in the magic ring. Tighten the ring by pulling the end of the yarn.

Round 2

2. Don’t make a slip stitch. Make a modified single crochet in the top of your first stitch of round 1: insert your hook in the top of the first stitch of round 1 grabbing just the back loop.

3. Yarn over.

4. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

5. Yarn under.

6. Pull the yarn through both loops. You have just made a modified single crochet.

7. To make a modified single crochet increase you just need to make one more modified single crochet in the same stitch. Don’t forget to put your marker in the first stitch of the round. If you don’t have a marker, you can use a simple hair pin.

8. Continue making modified single crochet increases until the end of the round. Follow the written pattern for the next rounds.

Round 10

9. In round 10 you have to introduce the white yarn. So, start making the first modified single crochet and stop when you have two loops on your hook. Then put your white yarn behind your hook and in front of the blue yarn like it is shown in the picture.

10. Yarn under the blue yarn.

11. Pull the yarn through both loops. Notice that the white yarn is now wrapped around with the blue yarn.

12. Then insert your hook in the back loop of the next stitch like it is shown in the picture.

13. Yarn over the blue yarn and pull it through.

14. Then yarn under the blue yarn.

15. Pull the yarn through both loops.

16. Keep working in the same way until the end of the round. Start making the last stitch of this round and stop when you have two loops on your hook. The first stitch in round 11 is white, therefore, you have to change yarn color.

17. So, put your white yarn up like it is shown in the picture.

18. Yarn under the white yarn.

19. Pull the yarn through. Now the white yarn is ready to use.

Round 11

20. Keep making modified single crochets with your white yarn.

21. When you reach the end of the round, start making the last stitch and stop when you have two loops on your hook. The first stitch in the next round should be blue, so you have to change the yarn color.

22. Finish the last stitch in round 11 with the blue yarn.

Round 12

23. In round 12 the first three stitches are blue, then one white, and the blue again. So, make two full modified single crochets with the blue yarn, start making the third one and stop when you have two loops on your hook.

24. Then finish it with the white yarn.

25. Start making the fourth stitch with the white yarn and stop when you have two loops on your hook. You have to change yarn color again because the next stitch should be blue.

26. So, finish the fourth stitch with the blue yarn.

27. Keep following the color chart until the end of the pattern.

Finishing up

28. To make the edge more even, make a few slip stitches in the end of the last round. Notice that the color pattern breaks where a new round begins. This is normal when you work in continuous rounds. Alternatively, you could make a slip stitch at the end of each round, then chain one (which counts as a stitch) and continue with modified single crochets.

29. This is how the basket looks when the edge is not folded in.
