Tapestry crochet basket Wave

I am happy to share a new free pattern for a tapestry crochet basket Wave. When I made it, I thought that it will work well for putting a few Easter eggs inside! The bottom of my tapestry crochet basket is not very firm, because I used quite thin yarn. But despite that I am very happy with a result and I hope that you will try to make it too 🙂

If you are not familiar with tapestry crochet, you can take a look at my photo tutorial here.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Strik & smil “Art silk garn”, 100% viscose, 50 g (white and green).
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0.
  • Optional: a piece of transparent mousse cake film or a few stripes of paper.

Notes

The diameter of my basket is 12.5 cm, height is 3.0 cm (6.0 cm not folded). You will be working in rounds. For this pattern you should be familiar with the tapestry crochet (you can find the tutorial here). Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make a basket. This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here).

To make a modified single crochet increase you need to make two modified single crochets in the same stitch. For this pattern you can work in continuous rounds, which means that in the end of a round you don’t join with a slip stitch, but instead continue making msc in the top of the first stitch of the round. Remember to use a marker showing the beginning of each round. Follow the color chart showing how you should change colors. This basket will not be very firm if you will be working with relatively thin yarn like me.

Pattern

Start by making a magic (adjustable) ring with your green yarn. You will not need your white yarn until round 16.

Round 1: 8 sc in the magic ring. (8 st in total)

Round 2: msc inc in every st. (16 st)

Round 3: *msc inc, 1 msc in the next st*, rep ** 8 times. (24 st)

Round 4: msc; *msc inc, 2 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, 1 msc. (32 st)

Round 5: 2 msc; *msc inc, 3 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, msc. (40 st)

Round 6: msc; *msc inc, 4 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, 3 msc. (48 st)

Round 7: 4 msc; *msc inc, 5 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, msc. (56 st)

Round 8: msc; *msc inc, 6 msc*. rep ** 7 times, msc inc, 5 msc. (64 st)

Round 9: 5 msc, *msc inc, 7 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc. 2 msc. (72 st)

Round 10: msc, *msc inc, 8 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, 7 msc. (80 st)

Round 11: 3 msc, *msc inc, 9 msc*, rep 7 ** times, msc inc, 6 msc. (88 st)

Round 12: 8msc, *msc inc, 10 msc*, rep 7 ** times, msc inc, 2 msc. (96 st)

Round 13: 5 msc, *msc inc, 11 msc*, rep 7 ** times, msc inc, 6 msc. (104 st)

Round 14: msc, *msc inc, 12 msc*, rep 7 ** times, msc inc, 11 msc. (112 st)

Round 15: 10 msc, *msc inc, 13 msc*, rep 7 ** times, msc inc, 3 msc. (120 st)

The bottom of the basket is finished. Introduce your white yarn.

Round 16-30: msc in every st of the prev round. (120 st)

In the end make 3 additional sl st in the next 3 st “to even out” the edge. Fasten off.

Finishing up

To make the basket more firm, cut a stripe (2.0 x 45.0 cm) of transparent mousse cake film (see photo instructions) or a few stripes of paper. Insert the film inside the basket and fold the edge of the basket inside hiding the film inside the edge. Straighten any wrinkles with your fingers. Done!

Color chart

Color chart Tapestry crochet basket

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 120 stitches (30 columns in the chart represent a quarter of the full pattern). Rows represent rounds. First 15 rounds are the bottom of the basket and the color chart starts from round 16. For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left. Just repeat columns 1-10 to get the full pattern for 120 stitches in a round.

Photo instructions for a tapestry crochet basket

Round 1

1. Start by making a magic ring. Then make 8 single crochets in the magic ring. Tighten the ring by pulling the end of the yarn.

Round 2

2. Don’t make a slip stitch. Make a modified single crochet in the top of your first stitch of round 1: insert your hook in the top of the first stitch of round 1 grabbing just the back loop.

3. Yarn over.

4. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

5. Yarn under.

6. Pull the yarn through both loops. You have just made a modified single crochet.

7. To make a modified single crochet increase you just need to make one more modified single crochet in the same stitch. Don’t forget to put your marker in the first stitch of the round. If you don’t have a marker, you can use a simple hair pin.

8. Continue making modified single crochet increases until the end of the round.

Round 15

9. This is how the bottom of the basket looks when 15 rounds are completed.

Round 16

10. In round 16 you have to introduce the white yarn. So, start making the first modified single crochet in round 16 but don’t finish it, stop when you have two loops on your hook.

11. Put the white yarn behind your hook and in front of the green yarn like it shown in the picture.

12. Yarn under the green yarn.

13. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. Now the white yarn is secured. Notice that it is wrapped with the green yarn.

14. Then insert you hook in the next stitch grabbing the back loop only.

15. Yarn over the green yarn.

16. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

17. Yarn under.

18. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. Remember to mark the beginning of this round.

19. The first stitch in round 17 should be white. So, start making the last modified single crochet in round 16, but don’t finish, stop when you have two loops on your hook.

20. Then put the white yarn up like it is shown in the picture.

21. Yarn under the white yarn.

22. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. Now the white yarn is ready to be used in round 17.

Round 17

23. Keep making white modified single crochets in round 17.

Round 18

24. The third stitch in round 18 should be green. So, start round 18 by making one full modified single crochet, then start making the second and stop when you have two loops on your hook.

25. Then move the green yarn up and yarn under.

26. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. Your green yarn is ready to be used again. Also, notice that there is a small color “mismatch” where the round ends. This happens when you work in continuous rounds, so it is normal. Continue following the color chart until the end.

Round 30

27. When you finish round 30, make three additional slip stitches to even out the edge. Fasten off.

Finishing up

28. This is how the finished basket looks like. Here the edge is not folded yet.

29. (Optional) Next you will need a piece of transparent mousse cake film or a few stripes of paper.

30. (Optional) To make the basket more firm, cut a stripe (2.0 x 45.0 cm) of transparent mousse cake film or a few stripes of paper.

31. (Optional) Insert the film inside the basket.

32. Fold the edge of the basket inside hiding the film (if you use it) inside the edge. Straighten all wrinkles with your fingers.

If i crochet in back loop all the time i will get a bigger circle, how will it create the sides of basket? I have crochet bags and in order to stop your work for bottom and continue with sides i had to do 1 round in back loop only. Unless there’s another way that i have not learned yet.

Msc means “modified single crochet”. You can find a tutorial showing how to make this stitch among my tutorials. Basically it is made like a single crochet in the back loop only, just in the last step, when you have two loops on your hook, yarn under instead of yarning over and pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You can see how to make this stitch in the photo instructions too. 2 msc means that you should make one modified single crochet in each of the next two stitches. I hope that this answers your question. If not, please let me know 🙂

how many chains do you need for the magic ring? Or do you not need any?
