The bars and zigzag stitch

In this step-by-step crochet stitch tutorial I show how to make the bars and zigzag stitch. This crochet stitch tutorial includes photo instructions and a video tutorial (see below). For this crochet stitch you should know how to make a double crochet. The tutorial below shows how to make a double crochet two together stitch, a back post double crochet and a front post double crochet. The bars and zigzag stitch is a repeat of two rows. The fabric has a nice texture.

For this tutorial I use Hjertagarn DIAMOND mercerized cotton 100% 8/4 50g, color: 1361 (grey), and a 2.0 mm hook.

Row 1

1. Start by chaining a multiple of four plus one. You will start working in the fourth chain from your hook.

2. So, make a double crochet in the fourth chain from your hook.

3. Continue making double crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

Row 2

4. Chain three and turn your work around. Chain three counts as a stitch.

5. Next you will make a back post double crochet working in the second double crochet of the previous row.

6. So, yarn over. Insert your hook bringing the post of the second double crochet to the back.

7. Yarn over.

8. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

9. Yarn over.

10. Pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook. Now you have two loops on your hook.

11. Yarn over.

12. Pull the yarn through both loops. You have just made a back post double crochet!

13. This is how it looks on the over side.

14. Chain one. Next you will make a double crochet two together.

15. So, yarn over.

16. Insert your hook in the next stitch and yarn over.

17. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

18. Yarn over.

19. Pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook. Now you have two loops on your hook. Yarn over.

20. Skip one stitch, insert your hook in the next one and yarn over.

21. Pull the yarn through. Now you have four loops on your hook.

22. Yarn over.

23. Pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook. Now you have three loops on your hook.

24. Yarn over.

25. Pull the yarn through all three loops on your hook. You have just made a double crochet two together!

26. Chain one.

27. Then make a back post double crochet in the next stitch.

28. Chain one.

29. Make another double crochet two together (work in the next stitch, skip one stitch and then work in the next one).

30. Chain one.

31. Make a back post double crochet in the next stitch.

32. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

33. At the end of the row make a back post double crochet in the last double crochet of the previous row.

34. Then make a double crochet in the turning chain.

Row 3

35. Chain three and turn your work around. Chain three counts as a stitch.

36. Next you will make a front post double crochet working in the second stitch. So, yarn over.

37. Insert your hook bringing the post of the second stitch to the front.

38. Yarn over.

39. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

40. Yarn over.

41. Pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook. Now you have two loops on your hook.

42. Yarn over and pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made a front post double crochet!

43. Make a double crochet in the chain one space, a double crochet in the next stitch and a double crochet in the next chain one space.

44. Then make a front post double crochet in the next stitch.

45. Then repeat: make three double crochets and a front post double crochet.

46. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

47. At the end of the row make a double crochet in the turning chain. For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2-3.
