The brick stitch (version 2)

In this step-by-step crochet tutorial I show how to make the brick crochet stitch version 2 (you can find the first version here). This version of the brick stitch is made using only one color yarn. For this stitch you should know how to make a single and a double crochet. For the other stitches, i.e. a single crochet front loop only and a long double crochet, I included detailed photo instructions below. This version of the brick crochet stitch is quite easy to make and it has a nice texture. It is a repeat of four rows.

For this tutorial I use Soft FRAYA Cotton 8/4 100% Organic cotton 50g – 180 m yarn, color: navy blue, and a 2.0 mm hook.

If you prefer a printable version without ads, you can purchase my ad-free e-book Beautiful crochet stitches Volume 1 with 50 detailed tutorials. In addition to the photo instructions the tutorials also include a short written stitch pattern.

Photo instructions for the brick crochet stitch (version 2)

Row 1

1. Start by chaining multiples of four. You will start working in the fourth chain from your hook.

2. So, make a double crochet in the fourth chain from your hook.

3. Continue making double crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

4. Chain one.

Row 2

5. Turn your work around. Chain one does not count as a stitch, so you will start working in the very first stitch.

6. Make a single crochet in the very first stitch.

7. Next you will make single crochets front loop only. This means that you will work only in the front loop of each “V”.

8. So, insert your hook grabbing just the front loop of the next stitch.

9. Yarn over.

10. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

11. Yarn over.

12. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made a single crochet front loop only!

13. Continue making single crochets front loop only until the end of the row.

14. At the end of the row make a single crochet in the turning chain.

15. Then chain three.

Row 3

16. Turn your work around. Chain three counts as a stitch, so you will start working in the second stitch.

17. So, make a double crochet in the second stitch. Next you will make a long double crochet in the loop of the stitch that is two rows below (in the second double crochet in row 1).

18. Yarn over.

19. Insert your hook grabbing only one loop of the double crochet two rows below.

20. Yarn over.

21. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

22. Yarn over.

23. Pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook. Now you have two loops on your hook.

24. Yarn over.

25. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made a long double crochet!

26. You will skip one stitch that is hiding behind the long double crochet and work in the next one.

27. So, skip that stitch behind the long double crochet and make a double crochet in the next stitch.

28. Then make two more double crochets in the next two stitches. Next you will make a long double crochet working in the stitch that is two rows below like before (you have to skip three double crochets in row 1 and work in the next one).

29. So, make a long double crochet working in the stitch that is two rows below.

30. Then skip one stitch that is hiding behind the long double crochet and make three double crochets in the next three stitches.

31. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

32. At the end of the row skip one stitch that is behind the long double crochet and make three double crochets in the last three stitches.

33. Chain one.

Row 4

34. Turn your work around. Chain one does not count as a stitch, so you will start working in the very first stitch. Make a single crochet in the very first stitch.

35. Then make a single crochet front loop only in the next stitch.

36. Continue making single crochets front loop only until the end of the row.

37. At the end of the row make a single crochet in the turning chain.

38. Chain three.

Row 5

39. Turn your work around. Chain three counts as a stitch, so you will start working in the second stitch.

40. Make a double crochet in the second stitch.

41. Then make two more double crochets in the next two stitches.

42. Make a long double crochet in the stitch that is two rows below (in the middle double crochet out of three in row 3).

43. Then skip one stitch that hiding behind the long double crochet and make three double crochets in the next three stitches.

44. Make a long double crochet in the next stitch two rows below.

45. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row until you have two stitches left.

46. Then make a long double crochet working in the stitch that is two rows below.

47. Make a double crochet in the last stitch. For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2-5.
