The interlocking block stitch

In this step-by-step crochet tutorial I show how to make the interlocking block crochet stitch (it is also know as the plaid stitch). For this stitch you should know how to make a single crochet and a double crochet. The tutorial below shows how to make a double crochet working two rows below.

The interlocking block crochet stitch is a repeat of two rows. To get the same color effect as in this example, you will need three colors. The color pattern for the interlocking block stitch is very beautiful. This stitch is reversible and looks the same on both sides. You don’t have to cut yarn after every row, which saves a lot of time as you don’t have to weave in all those ends!

For this tutorial I use Soft FRAYA Cotton 8/4 100% Organic cotton 50g – 180 m yarn, color: blue agave, sand and eucalyptus, and a 2.0 mm hook.

1. Start by chaining multiples of six plus five. You will start working in the fourth chain from your hook.

2. So, make a double crochet in the fourth chain from your hook.

3. Then make one more double crochet in the next stitch.

4. Chain three.

5. Skip three stitches and make three double crochets in the next three stitches.

6. Chain three, skip three stitches and make three double crochets in the next three stitches.

8. At the end of the row chain one with the second color yarn.

9. Pull the end of the firs color yarn to tighten up and secure the second color yarn. Now the second color yarn is ready to use. Don’t cut the first color yarn, you will pick it up later.

Row 2

10. Chain three and turn your work around. You will skip three double crochets of the previous row and make three double crochets in the foundation chain.

11. So, yarn over.

12. Skip three double crochets of the previous row, insert your hook in the first foundation chain out of three and yarn over.

13. Pull the yarn through: make sure to make a slightly taller loop than usually. Now you have three loops on your hook.

14. Yarn over.

15. Pull the yarn through the first two loops. Now you have two loops on your hook.

16. Yarn over.

17. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made a double crochet working in the foundation chain!

18. Then make two more double crochets in the next two foundation chains.

19. Chain three.

24. To complete the row you will make a slip stitch in the turning chain. So, insert your hook in the turning chain and yarn over.

25. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

26. Then pull the second loop through the first one. You have just made a slip stitch!

27. For row 3, introduce the third color yarn in the same way as before: chain one with the third color yarn and pull the end of the second color yarn.

Row 3

28. Chain three and turn your work around. You will start working in the double crochet two rows below (in the double crochet of the first row).

29. So, make a double crochet in the double crochet two rows below.

30. Then make another double crochet in the next double crochet two rows below.

31. Chain three.

32. Skip the next three double crochets of the previous row and make three double crochets in the three double crochets two rows below.

33. Chain three, skip three double crochets of the previous row and make three double crochets in the three double crochets two rows below.

34. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row. The row should end with three double crochets worked in the last three double crochets two rows below.

35. Then pick up the first color yarn: chain one with the first color yarn and pull the end of the third color yarn.

Row 4

36. Chain three and turn your work around.

37. Skip three double crochets of the previous row and make three double crochets in the three three double crochets two rows below.

38. Chain three, skip three stitches and make three double crochets in the three double crochets two rows below.

39. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row. When you make the last three double crochets, chain three.

40. Then make a slip stitch in the turning chain. For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 3 and 4 changing yarn color every row (from color one to color two, then to color three).

41. So, for row 5 pick up the second color yarn.

Row 5

42. Then repeat row 3: chain three and turn your work around.

43. Make two double crochets working in the two double crochets two rows below.

44. Chain three, skip three double crochets of the previous row and make three double crochets working two rows below.

45. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

46. At the end of the row pick up the third color yarn.

Row 6

47. Then repeat row 4: chain three and turn your work around.

48. Skip three double crochets of the previous row and make three double crochets in the three double crochets two rows below.

49. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row. Then change yarn color and keep repeating rows 3 and 4.

The last row

50. Make as many rows as needed to reach the desired height.

51. The last row is made in a slightly different way: instead of three chains in between the double crochets you will make three single crochets. So, change the yarn color for the last row.

52. Chain one and turn your work around. In this sample, the previous row is a repeat of row 4, therefore, I will start by making single crochets in the three double crochets of the previous row. If in your work the previous row is a repeat of row 3, you will start the row by chaining three as usually and then make two double crochets in the two double crochets two rows below. Then you will make three single crochets in the next three double crochets of the previous row.

53. So, make a single crochet in the very first stitch.

54. Then make two more single crochets in the next two stitches.

55. Make three double crochets in the three double crochets two rows below.

56. Then make three single crochets in the next three stitches.

57. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row. In this case the row will end with three single crochets. In case in your work the previous row is a repeat of row 3, your row will end with three double crochets worked in the three double crochets two rows below.
