The woven mesh stitch

In this step-by-step crochet tutorial I show how to make the woven mesh crochet stitch. For this stitch you should know how to make a single crochet and a double crochet. The tutorial below shows how to make a cross front post double crochet.

The woven mesh crochet stitch is a repeat of four rows. The fabric turns out light and it has a very beautiful texture. Each side of this stitch looks slightly different. The photo below shows how the other side looks like.

Row 1

1. Start by chaining multiples of six plus five. You will start working in the second stitch from your hook.

2. So, make a single crochet in the second stitch from your hook.

3. Then make two more single crochets in the next two stitches.

4. Chain one.

5. Skip one stitch and make two single crochets in the next two stitches.

6. Then repeat: chain one, skip one stitch and make two single crochets in the next two stitches.

7. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row until you have one stitch left.

8. Then make a single crochet in the last stitch.

Row 2

9. Chain three and turn your work around. Chain three counts as a stitch. Next you will make a cross front post double crochet.

10. So, yarn over.

11. Insert your hook bringing the post of the third single crochet of the previous row forward and yarn over.

12. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

13. Yarn over.

14. Pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook. Now you have two loops on your hook.

15. Yarn over.

16. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. Next you will make the second front post double crochet working in the previous stitch (in the second single crochet of the previous row).

17. So, yarn over.

18. Insert your hook bringing the post of the previous single crochet forward.

19. Yarn over.

20. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

21. Yarn over.

22. Pull the yarn through the first two loops. Now you have two loops on your hook.

23. Yarn over.

24. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made a cross front post double crochet!

25. Chain one.

26. Then skip the chain one space of the previous row and make two double crochets in the two single crochets of the previous row.

27. Chain one. Next you will make another cross front post double crochet working in the next two single crochets of the previous row.

28. So, skip the chain one space and the single crochet of the previous row and make a front post double crochet in the second single crochet.

29. Then make the second front post double crochet working in the previous single crochet.

30. Chain one.

31. Skip the chain one space and make two double crochets in the next two stitches.

32. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row: chain one, skip the chain one space, make a cross front post double crochet, chain one, skip the chain one space and make two double crochets in the next two stitches.

33. At the end of the row, when you make the last cross front post double crochet, don’t chain one. Instead make a double crochet in the last stitch of the row.

Row 3

34. Chain one and turn your work round. Chain one does not count as a stitch, so you will start working in the very first stitch.

35. Make a single crochet in the very first stitch.

36. Then make two more single crochets in the next two stitches.

37. Chain one.

38. Skip the chain one space and make two more single crochets in the next two stitches.

39. Chain one, skip the chain one space and make two single crochets in the next two stitches.

40. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

41. At the end of the row, when you make the last two single crochets, make one more single crochet in the turning chain.

Row 4

42. Chain three and turn your work around. Chain three counts as a stitch.

43. Make two double crochets in the second and in the third stitch of the previous row.

44. Chain one.

45. Skip the chain one space of the previous row and make a cross front post double crochet working in the two single crochets of the previous row.

46. Chain one.

47. Skip the chain one space and make two double crochets in the next two stitches.

48. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row: chain one, skip the chain one space and make a cross front post double crochet, chain one, skip the chain one space and make two double crochets in the next two stitches.

49. At the end of the row when you make the last two double crochets, don’t chain one. Instead make one more double crochet in the last stitch of the row.

Row 5

50. Chain one and turn your work around. Chain one does not counts as a stitch, so you will start working in the very first stitch.

51. So, make three single crochets in the three double crochets of the previous row.

52. Chain one.

53. Then skip the chain one space and make two single crochets in the next two stitches.

54. Chain one, skip the chain one space and make two single crochets in the next two stitches.

55. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

56. At the end of the row when you make the last two single crochets, don’t chain one. Instead make one more single crochet in the turning chain. For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2-5.
