20 beautiful multicolor crochet stitches

Here are 20 beautiful multicolor crochet stitches with links to my detailed tutorials. Most of these crochet stitches can be worked as two-color crochet stitches.

For some of the stitches I also include links to related free crochet patterns and printable PDF patterns that are available in all Nordic Hook shops.

1. The interlocking block stitch

The interlocking block stitch

The interlocking block stitch is also know as the plaid stitch. For this stitch you should know how to make a single crochet and a double crochet. The tutorial shows how to make a double crochet working two rows below.

The interlocking block stitch is a repeat of two rows. To get the same color effect as in this example, you will need three colors. This stitch is reversible and looks the same on both sides.

2. The small shell and V stitch

The small shell and V stitch

It is very easy to make and it is suitable for beginners. For this stitch you should know how to make a single crochet and a double crochet. The photo tutorial shows how to make the V stitch.

The small shell and V stitch is a repeat of two rows. In this example I use two colors and I change yarn color every row (I cut the yarn after every row).

For this stitch you should know how to make a single crochet and a double crochet. The tutorial shows how to make a double crochet working two rows below.

The interlocking double V stitch is a repeat of two rows. The color pattern for the interlocking double V stitch gives a ripple effect and it looks very interesting. This stitch is reversible and looks the same on both sides.

4. The crab claw stitch

The crab claw stitch

For this stitch you should know how to make a single crochet and a double crochet. The tutorial shows how to make a front post double crochet working two rows down.

The crab claw stitch is a repeat of four rows. The fabric turns out quite dense, it has a beautiful texture and those tiny crab claws formed by front post double crochets look very cute.

This stitch looks great when you use more than one color. It is made working in rounds and it is a repeat of one round. This stitch is not complicated to make.

6. The Paris stitch

The Paris stitch

For this stitch you should know how to make a single and a double crochet. It is very easy to make and it is suitable for beginners. The Paris stitch is a repeat of one row. This stitch is reversible and looks the same on both sides.

This stitch works great with multiple colors. You can change color as often as you wish. In the tutorial I show how to change colors and how the stitch looks when you change colors every row or every second row.

7. The tipped scales stitch

The tipped scales stitch

For this stitch you should know how to make a double crochet. The photo instructions show how to make a front post double crochet, a front post treble crochet and a front post double treble crochet that are needed to create a scale.

The tipped scales stitch is a repeat of one row and its texture looks the same on both sides. This stitch works great with two colors as each side is dominated by one color. The fabric turns out quite thick but it stretches too.

8. The long wave stitch

The long wave stitch

For this stitch you should know how to make a singlea double crochet and a treble crochet. It is quite easy to make and it is suitable for beginners. The long wave stitch is a repeat of four rows and looks very similar on both sides. In the tutorial I use only two colors, but this stitch works great with multiple colors too.

9. The granny spike stitch

The granny spike stitch

This stitch is not complicated to make as it is a repeat of one row. It is reversible and looks the same on both sides. For this stitch it is a good idea to use two or more colors. You can change yarn color every two rows, like in this tutorial, or every three or four rows, whatever works best for your design.

10. The box stitch

Box stitch

To make this stitch requires some effort and some parts in the beginning might seem a bit tricky, but the end result is totally worth it! I made this box stitch tutorial using two colors of yarn, but it also looks great just in one color or more than two colors.

11. The millstone stitch

The millstone stitch

This stitch is not very complicated to make, you just need to know how to make a single crocheta half double crochet and a double crochet. Photo instructions show in detail how to make a long double crochet.

For this stitch you will need at least two colors. The millstone stitch works well with multiple colors too: you can use a different color for every row of stones.

12. The modified caramel stitch

The modified caramel stitch requires to know how to make a chain and a single crochet. This stitch is composed of single crochets rows and a modified caramel stitch row.

In the tutorial I use two colors, but the stitch also looks great working with only one color. In addition, it is reversible and both sides are beautiful.

13. The cluster V stitch

The cluster V stitch

This stitch consists of chains and double crochets two together (dc2tog). The fabric turns out quite light and it goes fast to make this stitch. In this tutorial I used two colors, however, you can also make it with more colors or just with one color.

14. The larksfoot stitch

This stitch is quite easy to make. For the larksfoot stich you will need at least two colors of yarn. This stich looks very similar on both sides.

15. The moss stitch

This stitch is sometimes also called linen or granite stitch. It is quite simple to make: you only need to know how to make a chain and a single crochet, so it is beginner friendly.

16. The cat stitch

The cat stitch

For the cat stitch you will have to use at least two colors, but more than two colors also work well. The stitch is a repeat of three rows and it looks the same on both sides (it is reversible).

17. The houndstooth stitch

This stitch is very simple and it is suitable for beginners. It consists of single and double crochets and it is a repeat of one row. For this stitch you will need at least two colors, but you can use multiple colors too.

18. The Jacob’s ladder stitch

For this stitch you should know how to make a single and a double crochet. It is quite fast and easy to make. The Jacob’s ladder stitch is a repeat of two rows and looks different on each side.

For this stich you can use one color or more colors. In the tutorial below I use only two colors, but this stitch works great with multiple colors too. Also its texture looks beautiful just in one color.

This is an easy beginner friendly stitch. This stitch looks great if you use multiple colors, but have in mind that you will have some ends to weave in if you work with more than one color 🙂 This stitch is reversible and it is beautiful on both sides. It is a repeat of two rows.

This stitch is very easy to make and it looks great! For the brick stich you will need at least two colors of yarn. This stich looks very similar on both sides.
