Baskets Christmas Tales collection

Day 16: Basket with hearts

This is the 16th pattern from my Christmas Tales collection: a crochet basket with hearts. It could be used for cookies, nuts, candies and other small thingies. It would look great on your Christmas table.

This post is a part of the Nordic Hook Advent calendar. From December 1 to December 24 I will be posting one free Christmas crochet pattern per day. So stay tuned! 😉

You can find other Christmas Tales collection patterns here.

If you would like to have the whole collection as a book in PDF format right now (and to support me 🙂 ), you can purchase it here.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work (mercerized cotton works great in tapestry crochet projects). I used Tencel 100% lyocell, 50 g = 141 m, colors: red (318291) and white (318290).
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0 mm.

Abbreviations (US terms)

Notes

The diameter of my basket is 14.0 cm and the height is 6.0 cm (12.0 cm when not folded in). You will be working in rounds. For this pattern you should be familiar with the tapestry crochet (you can find the tutorial here). Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make a basket. This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here).

For this pattern you will work in continuous rounds, which means that in the end of a round you don’t join with a slip stitch, but instead continue making modified single crochets in the top of the first stitch of the round. Remember to use a marker showing the beginning of each round. Follow the color chart showing how you should change colors.

Color chart

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. The chart represents one fifth of the pattern: the first 24 stitches (24 columns in the chart) in a round. You should repeat stitches 1-24 five times (to have 120 stitches in one round). Rows represent rounds (there are 44 rounds, however, the first 15 rounds are not shown in the color chart: they are all red and they are the round base of the basket). For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left.

You can find a more detailed tutorial explaining how to read a color chart and when and how to change yarn color here.

Photo instructions for the basket with hearts

Round 16

1. See general photo instructions showing how to make a round base here. The first stitch in round 17 is white, therefore, complete the last stitch in round 16 with the white yarn.

Round 17

2. Then continue working with the white yarn.

Round 18

3. In round 18 the 7th stitch is red. So, make 5 full mscs with the white yarn, start making the 6th msc, but complete it with the red yarn.

4. Then start making the 7th msc with the red yarn, but complete it with the white yarn, because the next stitch should be white again.

Round 25

5. Continue to follow the color chart.

Round 26

6. After a while the basket will look like this.

Round 44

7. When you complete the basket, make 4 slip stitches to even out the edge. See general photo instructions showing how to do that here.

Finished basket with hearts

8. Done! Fold in the sides of the basket. The folding line should be on round 30.

Enjoy your crochet basket with hearts!
