Here is a free crochet pattern for a tapestry crochet coaster. It is double-sided and thick.
The pattern includes a list of materials, abbreviations, notes, written pattern, color chart and detailed step-by-step photo instructions. This quick crochet project uses the tapestry crochet technique. Even if you haven’t tried this technique before, the photo tutorial will guide you along the way, and you will easily complete the project. If you would like to learn more about this technique, you can take a look at my tutorial here.
To make this coaster you have to work in rounds. I tried making this pattern in rows instead but I like this version much more. Firstly, in this way it is a bit more firm as you can put a piece of cardboard inside. Secondly, the stitches are more even when you work in rounds compared to working in rows because you don’t need to turn your work, since when you turn, the front and the back side of a stitch do not look the same. However, you are free to choose, and if you decide that you want a thinner coaster, you can work in rows. Just don’t forget to divide the color chart into two parts and use only the second part which has a picture (columns 28 – 54).

Materials
- Yarn: I use Järbo 8/4 100% Cotton “Mercerized & Gassed” 50 g (offwhite and linen). However, any thin cotton yarn will work.
- Hook: I use a 2.0 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.
Abbreviations (US terms)
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- msc: modified single crochet
- prev: previous
- st: stitch
Notes
The size of my coaster is 10.5 x 11.0 cm. You will be working in rounds. This pattern uses the tapestry crochet technique (you can find the tutorial here). The photo instructions below show how to make a coaster.
This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial below). Except the first round, every round is made in the same way: chain one, make 53 modified single crochets, join with a slip stitch (to the ch 1 you made in the beginning of the round).
Follow the color scheme showing how you should change color. To make the coaster more firm you can cut out a cardboard rectangle and insert it in the coaster before closing it. Photo instructions below show an example how to add the second color and change colors. The photos show white and green yarn but you can use the colors you wish.
Pattern
Start by chaining 26 + 1 with white yarn.
Round 1: To make the first round, you will be working down the chain, then turn and work in the other side of the chain. Make sc in every st of the chain starting from the second chain from your hook. Turn. 1 sc in the end of the chain, make sc in every st (starting with the one you have just worked into; now that st has 3 sc in total) until you come back to the beginning of the chain. 1 sc in the end of the chain. Join with a sl st to the first sc of this round. In total you should have 54 st.
Now add the linen yarn and follow the color scheme for all rounds until the end.
Round 2-27: ch 1, msc in every st of the prev round. Join with a sl st.
Cut the linen yarn and fasten it off, then close the coaster with slip stitches (see photo instructions below). Fasten off.
Color chart

How to read the chart
Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 54 stitches (54 columns in the scheme). Rows represent rounds. For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left. The chain that you make in the beginning of each round counts a stitch.
Photo instructions
How to start the coaster

1. Start with a chain.

2. Then make single crochets around it. Join with a sl st to the first sc in this round, not to the chain 1. You do this only in the first round, in all other rounds you have to make a sl st into the ch 1 which you make in the beginning of the round.
How to add the second color

1. Put the second color yarn (green in this case) behind your hook and in front of the first color yarn (white in this case) that you are working with.

2. Chain one. Now your yarn of the second color is secured.
How to make a modified single crochet

1. Make the first msc wrapping the green yarn: start by inserting your hook in the back loop of the next stitch. Yarn over the white yarn.

2. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

3. Instead of yarning over, like you would do for the usual single crochet, you should yarn under.

4. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made a modified single crochet.
How to change color

1. If the next stitch should be in green, start making the current stitch with white yarn, but don’t finish it.

2. Yarn under the green yarn.

3. Then finish the current stitch with the green yarn. This green loop that you have on your hook will become the top of your next stitch, which should be in green.

4. Make the next stitch in green.
How to close the coaster

1. Before closing the coaster, you can put inside the cardboard rectangle. Then insert your hook grabbing one loop of one stitch from the each side like it is shown in the picture.

2. Yarn over.

3. Pull the yarn through all the loops on your hook.

4. Continue making the slip stitches until your coaster is completely closed.

5. Done!
Enjoy your tapestry crochet coaster!
