Tapestry crochet zipper pouch Evelyn

I am happy to introduce a free crochet pattern for a tapestry crochet zipper pouch Evelyn. I think I will never get tired of making these zipper pouches, I like them so much! 🙂

Don’t hesitate to try this pattern even if you haven’t tried tapestry crochet projects before. I have quite detailed photo instructions below that should help you along the way. Also, you can check my full tapestry crochet tutorial here. If you think that you would feel more comfortable by starting with something more simple where you don’t need to change yarn color so often, you can take a look at my other tapestry crochet patterns here.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used DIAMOND mercerized cotton 100% 8/4 50g. Colors: 1361 (grey) and 3803 (light lilac).
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0.

Notes

The size of my pouch is 12.0 x 9.0 cm. You will be working in rounds. For this pattern you should be familiar with the tapestry crochet (you can find the tutorial here). The photo instructions below show the main steps how to make a pouch. This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here).

For this pattern you can work in continuous rounds, which means that in the end of a round you don’t join with a slip stitch, but instead continue making modified single crochets in the top of the first stitch of the round. Remember to use a marker showing the beginning of each round. Follow the color chart showing how you should change colors.

Pattern

Start by chaining 36 with the grey yarn.

Round 1: To make the first round, you will be working down the chain, then turn and work on the other side of the chain. Make sc in every st of the chain starting from the second chain from your hook. Turn. 1 sc in the end of the chain, make sc in every st (starting with the one you have just worked into; now that st has 3 sc in total) until you come back to the beginning of the chain. 1 sc in the end of the chain. In total you should have 72 st.

Add your lilac yarn like it is shown in the photo instructions below. Follow the color chart for all the rounds until the end.

Round 2-23: msc in every st of the previous round.

To “even out” the edge, make four slip stitches (see photo instructions below). Fasten off and sew in a zipper.

Color chart

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 72 stitches. Rows represent rounds. For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left.

For your convenience, the second color chart shows only one half of the pattern (stitches 1-36 in each round). The other half of the pattern (stitches 37-72) is exactly the same (the pattern repeats every six stitches).

Photo instructions for the tapestry crochet zipper pouch Evelyn

Round 1

1. Start by chaining 36.

2. Make a single crochet in the second chain from your hook.

3. Continue making single crochets until the end of the chain.

4. Then make one single crochet in the end of the chain.

5. Turn your work and make one more single crochet in the same stitch.

6. Then continue making single crochets in every stitch until you reach the end.

7. Make one single crochet in the end of the chain. In total you should have 72 stitches.

Round 2

8. Don’t join with a slip stitch. Instead insert your hook in the first stitch of the round grabbing just the back loop.

9. Yarn over.

10. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

11. Now you will introduce the lilac yarn. So, take your lilac yarn and put it behind your hook and in front of the grey yarn like it is shown in the picture.

12. Then yarn under the grey yarn.

13. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made a modified single crochet. Now your lilac yarn is secured: notice how it is wrapped with the grey yarn.

14. Then insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop like it is shown in the picture.

15. Yarn over.

16. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

17. Yarn under.

18. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook.

19. Keep making modified single crochets until the end of the round. When you make the last stitch of the round, don’t finish it, stop when you have two loops on your hook. The first stitch in round 3 is lilac, therefore, you have to change yarn color.

20. So, put your lilac yarn up.

21. Yarn under the lilac yarn.

22. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. Now the lilac yarn is ready to use.

Round 3

23. So, make the first stitch in round 3 with the lilac yarn.

24. Keep working with the lilac yarn until the end of the round. When you make the last stitch of the round, stop when you have two loops on your hook because you have to change yarn color again.

25. So, finish the last stitch in round 3 with the grey yarn.

Round 4

26. Then make the first stitch in round 4 with the grey yarn. Keep working in the same way until the end of the round.

Round 5

27. In round 5 the first stitch is grey, so start making it with the grey yarn. Stop when you have two loops on your hook, because the second stitch is lilac and you have to change yarn color.

28. So, finish the first stitch with the lilac yarn.

29. Then start making the second stitch with the lilac yarn but stop when you have two loops on your hook. You have to change yarn color again because the third stitch is grey.

30. So, finish the second stitch with the grey yarn.

31. Keep following the color chart until the end of the pattern.

Round 23

32. When you are done with round 23, you have to make a few slip stitches to “even out” the edge. So, insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop and yarn over (keep the lilac yarn aside).

33. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

34. Pull the first loop through the second loop. You have just made a slip stitch.

35. Make three more slip stitches in the next three stitches.
