In this step-by-step crochet tutorial I show how to make the rice stitch. The rice crochet stitch consists of front post double crochets and back post double crochets. It is a repeat of one row. This stitch is reversible and it looks the same on both sides. The rice crochet stitch has a beautiful texture and the fabric turn out quite thick.
For this tutorial I use Hjertegarn DIAMOND mercerized cotton 100% 8/4 50g, color: 361 (grey), and a 2.0 mm hook.

Photo instructions for the rice crochet stitch
Row 1

1. Start by chaining an odd number of chains.

2. In the third chain from your hook make a double crochet.

3. Continue making double crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

4. Then chain one.
Row 2

5. Turn your work around.

6. Make a half double crochet in the first stitch (chain one that you have just made does not count as a stitch).

7. Now you will have to make a front post double crochet in the next stitch. So, yarn over.

8. Insert your hook bringing the post of the next stitch forward like it is shown in the picture.

9. Yarn over.

10. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

11. Yarn over.

12. Pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook. Now you have two loops on your hook.

13. Yarn over.

14. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook.

15. Now you will have to make a back post double crochet in the next stitch. So, yarn over.

16. Insert your hook from the back side to bring the post of the next stitch backwards like it is shown in the picture.

17. Yarn over.

18. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

19. Yarn over and pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook.

20. Then yarn over and pull the yarn through both loops on your hook.

21. Make a front post double crochet in the next stitch, then make a back post double crochet in the next stitch.

22. Keep alternating front and back post double crochets until the end of the row.

23. Make a half double crochet in the last stitch (the turning chain two does not count as a stitch, so the last stitch in the previous row is a double crochet).

24. For the rest of the pattern you should repeat row 2. So, chain one.
Row 3

25. Turn your work around and make a half double crochet in the first stitch.

26. Then make a front post double crochet in the next stitch (the post of the first stitch in the previous row is popping out to the other side of the work: you have to bring it forward by making a front post double crochet).

27. Make a back post double crochet in the next stitch (the post of the next stitch in the previous row is popping out forward: you have to bring it backwards by making a back post double crochet).

28. Keep alternating front and back post double crochets until the end of the row.

29. Make a half double crochet in the last stitch (turning chain one does not count as a stitch).
