Here are two free crochet patterns for snowflakes: a large and a small snowflake. It is a great project for a cozy Christmas season. These Christmas ornaments are quick and fun to make and perfectly suitable for beginners. Some time ago, I made two other snowflakes; you can take a look at my previous snowflake designs here.
This new design for snowflakes includes a ‘frosty’ edge, which I really like. It is quite easy to make: you just have to alternate single crochets and chains of two. The stitches might feel a bit crowded when you are making them, but don’t worry, the end result will be just fine.
The pattern includes a list of materials, abbreviations, notes, a written pattern and two charts. You can find my other free crochet patterns for Christmas here and more free crochet projects here.

Materials
- Yarn: I use blue Somerset linen silk yarn 50 g from a local store. However, any thin cotton yarn will work.
- Hook: I use a 1.25 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.
Abbreviations (US terms)
- sl st: slip stitch
- st: stitch
- ch: chain
- sc: single crochet
- cluster of 4 dc: cluster of 4 double crochet
- prev: previous
- rnd: round
- rep **: repeat from * to *
Notes
You will be working in rounds. The diameter of the small snowflake is 7 cm. A cluster of 4 dc is made in a similar way as a cluster of 2 dc (or dc2tog), just before finishing the cluster you should have 4 dc in total on your hook instead of 2.
Pattern
Begin with an adjustable (magic) ring.
Round 1: make 12 sc in the magic ring, join with a sl st.
Round 2: ch 1, sc in the next st, ch 3; *2 sc in the 2 following st, ch 3*, rep ** 5 times, join with a sl st.
Round 3: ch 3 (this is your first dc in the cluster of 4 dc), make the second and third dc in the two following st, make the fourth dc of the cluster in the ch3 space. Ch 7. *make the first dc of the cluster in the same ch3 space, the second and the third dc in the two following st, and the fourth dc of the cluster in the ch3 space, ch 7*, rep ** 5 times. Join with a sl st.
Round 4: ch 1. *In the ch7 space: sc, ch 2, sc, ch 2, sc, ch 2, sc, ch 4, sc, ch 2, sc, ch 2, sc, ch 2, sc. Sc in the cluster of 4 dc of the prev rnd*, rep ** 6 times. Join with a sl st. Fasten off.
