Alpine stitch

The alpine stitch is relatively simple to make and it gives your work a nice texture. This stitch consists of double crochets (dc), single crochets (sc) and front post double crochets (fpdc).

Below you can find a photo tutorial showing how to make the alpine stitch, as well as a chart. I use the alpine stitch in my small alpine stitch bag.

1. For this tutorial, start with an even number of chains. Then chain three, make the first double crochet in the fourth loop from your hook and continue making double crochets until the end of the row. This is your usual row of double crochets.

2. Chain one (this chain does NOT count as a stitch) turn around your work and make a row of single crochets (starting from the first stitch of the previous row). Chain two (chain two counts as a stitch).

3. Turn your work around and yarn over.

4. Now you will make a front post double crochet in the second double crochet post of the first row: insert your hook as it is shown in the picture.

5. Finish making a front post double crochet as usually: you have already yarned over, so pull the yarn through and make sure that you are pulling the yarn to the level of your current row, don’t make it too tense; yarn over, pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook, yarn over and pull the yarn through the remaining two loops on your hook.

6. Make a double crochet in the third single crochet of the previous row (you have to skip one stitch because your front post double crochet takes that space).

7. Now make a front post double crochet in the fourth double crochet post of the first row. You have to skip one double crochet of the first row because you have just made a double crochet above it.

8. Continue alternating double crochets and front post double crochets until the end of the row. Always finish the row with a double crochet.

9. Chain one (this does NOT count as a stitch). Turn your work around and make a row of single crochets. Chain two.

10. Now you will be making double crochets above the front post double crochets of the third row and front post double crochets above the double crochets of the third row. So, make a double crochet in the second single crochet of the fourth row.

11. Next make a front post double crochet in the double crochet post of the third row: insert your hook to bring the double crochet post to the front.

12. Finish making the front post double crochet.

13. Make a double crochet in the fourth single crochet of the previous row (you have to skip one stitch like before).

14. Keep alternating double crochets and front post double crochets until the end of the row. Always finish a row with a double crochet. Make as many rows as you need by repeating row 2-5. You can finish your work with a row of single crochets. Done!
