The alpine stitch is quite simple to make and it gives your work a nice texture. This stitch consists of double crochets (dc), single crochets (sc) and front post double crochets (fpdc). It is a repeat of four rows.

Photo instructions for the alpine stitch
Row 1

1. Start by chaining any odd number of chains. You will start working in the fourth chain from your hook.

2. So, make a double crochet in the fourth chain from your hook.

3. Continue making double crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.
Row 2

4. Chain one and turn your work around. Chain one does not count as a stitch.

5. Make a single crochet in the very first stitch.

6. Continue making single crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

7. At the end of the row make the last single crochet in the turning chain.
Row 3

8. Chain two and turn your work around. Chain two counts as a stitch.

9. Next you will make a front post double crochet working in the double crochet two rows below. So, yarn over.

10. Insert your hook bringing the post of the double crochet two rows below (in the first row) to the front.

11. Yarn over.

12. Pull the yarn through. Make sure to make a slightly taller loop so that your work would not curl. Now you have three loops on your hook.

13. Yarn over.

14. Pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook. Now you have two loops on your hook.

15. Yarn over.

16. Pull the yarn through both loops. You have just made a front post double crochet!

17. Next you will skip the stitch that is hiding behind the front post doble crochet and work in the next one.

18. So, make a double crochet in the next stitch.

19. Then make another front post double crochet working in the next stitch two rows below.

20. Make a double crochet in the next stitch.

21. Then repeat: make a front post double crochet in the next stitch two rows below, make a double crochet in the next stitch.

22. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row. The row should end with a double crochet.
Row 4

28. Make a double crochet in the second stitch.

29. Then make a front post double crochet working in the double crochet two rows below.

30. Make a double crochet in the next stitch.

31. Make a front post double crochet working in the double crochet two rows below.

32. Then repeat: make a double crochet in the next stitch and a front post double crochet working in the double crochet two rows below.

33. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.
