Circles crochet pouch with a zipper

It’s so good to be back after this long break! I hope that you are all well in these strange times. All summer I was extremely busy with my new job and hunting for a new apartment. However, now everything seems to be back on track and I am ready to share with you my new free crochet patterns! So today I want to present this cute circles crochet pouch with a zipper that could be perfect for keeping your crochet hooks. Usually I keep my hooks in a glass, where I can easily see them all, but if I need to take them with me, this is a great solution. In addition, you can use the pouch for your pencils too.

This crochet pouch is another tapestry crochet project. Unlike my other pouches and bags, circles crochet pouch design includes three colors: white, light lilac and dark lilac. If you are completely new at tapestry crochet, I would suggest that you start with patterns that use two colors (for example, you can take a look at my moon bag, steps crochet drawstring bag, honey pouch, music note bag and others). Even though the principle of working with two or three yarns is the same, it will be easier not to get tangled if you practice with two yarns first.

For the tapestry crochet items, you can use any thin yarn, but for me 100% mercerized cotton gives the best result.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used DIAMOND 8/4 mercerized cotton 100% 50 g. Colors: 201 (white), 3304 (dark lilac) and 3803 (light lilac).
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0.

Notes

The size of my pouch is 16.0 x 6.5 cm. You will be working in rounds. For this pattern you should be familiar with tapestry crochet (you can find the tutorial here). The photo instructions below show the main steps how to make the pouch. This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, but instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here). Except for the first round, every round is made in the same way: chain one, make 83 modified single crochets, join with a slip stitch. Follow the color chart showing how you should change colors.

Crochet zipper pouch

Pattern

Start by chaining 42 with white yarn.

Round 1: To make the first round, you will be working down the chain, then turn and work on the other side of the chain. Make sc in every st of the chain starting from the second chain from your hook. Turn. 1 sc in the end of the chain, make sc in every st (starting with the one you have just worked into; now that st has 3 sc in total) until you come back to the beginning of the chain. 1 sc in the end of the chain. Before joining with a sl st, add the light lilac and dark lilac yarn like it is shown in the photo instructions below. Join with a sl st to the first sc of this round. In total you should have 84 st.

Follow the color scheme for all the rounds until the end.

Round 2-15: ch 1, msc in every st of the prev round. Join with a sl st.

Fasten off. Sew in a zipper.

Color chart for the crochet pouch

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 84 stitches (42 columns in the scheme times 2). Rows represent rounds. For each round you have to read the row in the scheme from right to left (columns 43-84 are the same as 1-42). The chain that you make in the beginning of each round counts a stitch.

After finishing the first round you have 84 linen stitches. Before joining with sl st, check what is the color of the first st in the next round. Round 2 starts with a white st, therefore, the sl st should be white (if the row would start in lilac, the sl st would be in lilac).

Round 2 says you need 1 white stitch, then 4 dark lilac, 3 white, 4 dark lilac, etc. So, for the second round it goes like this: the slip stitch you have just made to finish the first round is in white and it will become the body of the first st in round 2. As the second st in round 2 is in dark lilac, you should change the yarn color before finishing your first stitch. Therefore, the chain should be in dark lilac (it will become the top of your second st).

Now make three full msc in dark lilac, start the fourth msc in dark lilac (note that the fourth msc is the fifth st in the color chart) and since the next st should be white, finish the fourth msc with your white yarn. Keep working in the same way until the end. See the rules below and photo instructions for further explanations.

Rules for changing color

The last msc of the round

Finish making your last msc of the round with the same color yarn as the first st of the round. For example, round 2 ends with a white st and starts with a white st, therefore, finish the last st of round 2 with white yarn.

The slip stitch

The color of a sl st depends on the color of the first st in the next round. For example, round 2 ends with a white st and starts with a white st, so finish making your msc with white yarn; round 3 starts with a dark lilac st, which means that you should make a sl st to finish round 2 in dark lilac.

Photo instructions for the crochet pouch

Round 1

1. Start with a chain and make single crochets around it. Before joining with a sl st, put your light lilac and dark lilac yarns behind your hook and in front of the white yarn that you are working with like it shown in the picture. Then use the white yarn and join with a sl st to the first sc in this round, not to the ch 1. You do this only in the first round, in all other rounds you have to make a sl st into the ch 1 you make in the beginning of the round.

2. After joining with a sl st, the front side looks like this. Now your light lilac and dark lilac yarns are secure and ready to work with.

3. This is how it looks from the back side.

Round 2

4. The first st in round 2 is white and the second st is dark lilac. You would naturally want to make a chain in white, but actually it should be in dark lilac. The reason for this is that the sl st you have just made will be body of your first st in round 2. The chain that you are about to make will be the top of the second st, which is in dark lilac. Therefore you should use dark lilac yarn.

5. So ch 1 using your dark lilac yarn.

6. To make a msc, insert your hook in the next st grabbing just the back loop, yarn over and pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook. Then, instead of yarning over, yarn under like it is shown in the picture. Make sure that you are wrapping both the white and light lilac yarns.

7. Pull the yarn through both loops. You have just made the first msc. Notice that your white and light lilac yarns are wrapped and hidden.

8. Make two more msc with the dark lilac yarn. Start the fourth dark lilac msc and stop when you have two loops on your hook.

9. The next st should be in white, so bring the white yarn up and yarn under like it shown in the picture.

10. Then pull the yarn through both loops. Your white yarn is ready to use.

11. Follow the color chart and continue working in the same way.

12. When you reach the end of round 2, finish the last msc with the white yarn because the first st in round 2 is white. This last loop of your last mcs will become the top of the first st in round 2. Then you should make a sl st using your dark lilac yarn because the first st in round 3 is dark lilac.
