Snowflakes 2

It is getting much colder now in Denmark and I hope for  white Christmas. In this spirit, I decided to make another post for crochet snowflakes (you can take a look at my previous snowflakes design here). So here they are: two new free patterns for a small and for a large snowflake. These Christmas ornaments are quick and fun to make, and they are perfectly suitable for beginners.

This new design for snowflakes includes a ‘frosty’ edge, which I really like. It is quite easy to make: you just have to alternate single crochets and chains of two. The stitches might feel a bit crowded when you will be making them, but don’t worry, the end result will be just fine.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used blue Somerset linen silk yarn 50 g from a local store.
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 1.25.

Abbreviations (US terms)

  • sl st: slip stitch
  • st: stitch
  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • cluster of 4 dc: cluster of 4 double crochet
  • prev: previous
  • rnd: round
  • rep **: repeat from * to *

Notes

You will be working in rounds. The diameter of the small snowflake is 7 cm. A cluster of 4 dc is made in a similar way as a cluster of 2 dc (or dc2tog), just before finishing the cluster you should have 4 dc in total on your hook instead of 2.

Pattern

Begin with an adjustable (magic) ring.

Round 1: make 12 sc in the magic ring, join with a sl st.

Round 2: ch 1, sc in the next st, ch 3; *2 sc in the 2 following st, ch 3*, rep ** 5 times, join with a sl st.

Round 3: ch 3 (this is your first dc in the cluster of 4 dc), make the second and third dc in the two following st, make the fourth dc of the cluster in the ch3 space. Ch 7. *make the first dc of the cluster in the same ch3 space, the second and the third dc in the two following st, and the fourth dc of the cluster in the ch3 space, ch 7*, rep ** 5 times. Join with a sl st.

Round 4: ch 1. *In the ch7 space: sc, ch 2, sc, ch 2, sc, ch 2, sc, ch 4, sc, ch 2, sc, ch 2, sc, ch 2, sc. Sc in the cluster of 4 dc of the prev rnd*, rep ** 6 times. Join with a sl st. Fasten off.
