The cluster and cross double crochet stitch

In this free step-by-step crochet tutorial I show how to make the cluster and cross double crochet stitch. This stitch is a lacy crochet stitch. The fabric turns out light and breathable. It works great for shawls and wraps, lightweight scarves, lacy crochet summer tops and tanks, lightweight blankets and other summer crochet projects. This stitch can also be used in decorative crochet projects for the home.

This crochet stitch tutorial includes detailed photo instructions. The cluster and cross double crochet stitch is a repeat of two rows. For this stitch you should know how to make adouble crochet. The tutorial below shows how to make a double crochet three together stitch and a cross double crochet.

Materials and tools

Yarn: For this tutorial I use Hjertagarn DIAMOND mercerized cotton 100% 8/4 50g, color: 1361 (grey). However, you can use your favorite yarn depending on the crochet project.

Hook: I use a 2.0 mm hook. If you are using a different yarn, choose the hook size that is recommended on your yarn label.

Photo instructions for the cluster and cross double crochet stitch

Row 1

1. Start by chaining multiples of four plus three. You will start working in the sixth stitch from your hook.

2. So, make a double crochet in the sixth chain from your hook.

3. Then chain one. Next you will make a double crochet two stitches back.

4. So, yarn over.

5. Insert your hook two stitches back and yarn over.

6. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

7. Yarn over.

8. Pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook. Now you have two loops on your hook.

9. Yarn over.

10. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made a cross double crochet!

11. Then make a double crochet in the next stitch (the next stitch after the one where you made the first double crochet).

12. Next you will make another cross double crochet. So, skip two stitches and make a double crochet in the next one.

13. Chain one.

14. Then make a double crochet two stitches back.

15. Make a double crochet in the next stitch.

16. Make another cross double crochet: skip two stitches and make a double crochet, chain one and make a double crochet two stitches back. Then make a double crochet in the next stitch.

17. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row. The row should end with a double crochet.

18. Chain four.

Row 2

19. Turn your work around. Next you will make a double crochet three together in the chain one space of the previous row (in the middle of the cross double crochet).

20. So, yarn over.

21. Insert your hook in the chain one space and yarn over.

22. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

23. Yarn over.

24. Pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook. Now you have two loops on your hook.

25. Yarn over.

26. Insert your hook in the same chain one space and yarn over.

27. Pull the yarn through. Now you have four loops on your hook.

28. Yarn over.

29. Pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook. Now you have three loops on your hook.

30. Yarn over.

31. Insert your hook in the same chain one space and yarn over.

32. Pull the yarn through. Now you have five loops on your hook.

33. Yarn over.

34. Pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook. Now you have four loops on your hook.

35. Yarn over.

36. Pull the yarn through all loops on your hook. You have just made a double crochet three together!

37. Chain one.

38. Then make a double crochet in the double crochet of the previous row.

39. Chain one.

40. Then make another double crochet three together in the next chain one space.

41. Chain one.

42. Then make a double crochet in the double crochet of the previous row.

43. Chain one, make a double crochet three together in the next chain one space, chain one and make a double crochet in the double crochet of the previous row.

44. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

45. At the end of the row make the last double crochet in the turning chain.

46. Chain three.

Row 3

47. Turn your work around. Next you will make a cross double crochet working in the first two chain one spaces.

48. So, make the first double crochet in the second chain one space of the previous row.

49. Chain one.

50. Then make the second double crochet in the previous chain one space.

51. Make a double crochet in the double crochet of the previous row. Next you will make another cross double crochet.

52. So, skip the next chain one space and make a double crochet in the next one.

53. Chain one.

54. Then make the second double crochet in the previous chain one space.

55. Make a double crochet in the double crochet of the previous row.

56. Then repeat: make a cross double crochet in the next two chain one spaces and then make a double crochet in the double crochet of the previous row.

57. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row.

58. At the end of the row make the last double crochet in the turning chain. For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2 and 3.
