I am happy to share my new free crochet pattern for a mini spider stitch crochet bag. Like my other tiny bags, it is perfect for packing a small present!
For the middle part of this crochet bag I use the spider stitch. If you are not familiar with this stitch, don’t worry, it is very simple. You can find a tutorial showing how to make this stitch here. In addition, I included detailed photo instructions in this pattern as well.
Join Nordic Hook Club to get access to one of the largest crochet stitch libraries! There you will find hundreds of ad-free downloadable crochet stitch tutorials that include detailed step-by-step photo instructions and member-exclusive concise written patterns and CHARTS. Plus, you can download all Nordic Hook patterns and e-books! Read more about all the membership benefits here.

Alternatively you could use this pattern to make a small pouch with a zipper: instead of attaching handles, you could sew in a zipper (find the tutorial for sewing in a zipper here).
Good luck!

Notes
The size of my crochet bag is 10.0 x 13.0 cm. You will be working in rounds. This pattern uses the spider stitch. Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make this stitch working in rounds. It consists of only one row that you should repeat until you reach the desired height. The spider stitch is easy to make and it is suitable for beginners.
In the first three rounds and in round 8 your turning chain does not count as a stitch. Have in mind, that the spider stitch is very dense, it increases the number of stitches by 50%. To keep the same width of the bag, you could increase the tension when you are making the spider stitch and reduce the tension for all other rounds. Otherwise the part with a spider stitch might become wider.

Pattern
Making the bag
Start by chaining 24 with dark lilac yarn.
Round 1: To make the first round, you will be working down the chain, then turn and work on the other side of the chain. So, make sc in every st of the chain starting from the second chain from your hook. Turn. 1 sc in the end of the chain, make sc in every st (starting with the one you have just worked into; now that st has 3 sc in total) until you come back to the beginning of the chain. 1 sc in the end of the chain. Join with a sl st to the first sc of this round. In total you should have 48 st. (See the chart below)
Round 2: ch 1, sc inc, then make 21 sc, 3 sc inc in the next three st, 21 sc, 2 sc inc in the next two st, join with a sl st. to the first sc of this round. In total you should have 54 st.
Round 3: ch 1, sc inc, then make 22 sc, sc inc, sc, sc inc, sc, sc inc, 22 sc, sc inc, sc, sc inc, sc, join with a sl st to the first sc of this round. In total you should have 60 st.
Round 4-6: ch 2, hdc in every st, join with a sl st to the turning chain. In total you should have 60 st.
Change to light lilac yarn.
Round 7: ch 2, sc-3lo in every st, join with a st sl to the turning chain. In total you should have 60 st.
Round 8: spider stitch: ch 1. *sc, ch 1, sc, skip one st, sc, ch 1, sc* repeat ** until the end of the round. Join with a sl st to the first sc of the round. In total you should have 90 st.
Round 9-19: spider stitch: don’t ch 1, *sc in the ch1 space of the prev round, ch 1, sc in the same ch 1 space of the prev round*, repeat ** until the end of the round, connect with a sl st to the first sc of this round. In total you should have 90 st.
Round 20: don’t ch 1, 2 sc in every ch1 space of the prev round, join with a sl st to the first sc of this round. In total you should have 60 st.
Round 21: ch 2, hdc in every st of the prev round, join with a sl st to the turning chain. In total you should have 60 st.
Change to dark lilac yarn.
Round 22: ch 2, hdc-3lo in every st of the prev round, join with a sl st to the turning chain. In total you should have 60 st.
Round 23-26: ch 2, 1 hdc in every st of the prev round. join with a sl st to the turning chain. In total you should have 60 st.
Fasten off.
Making the string
Start by chaining 42. The length of the chain should be around 13 cm long. Make a row of slip stitches in the third loop of the chain as it is shown in photo instructions below. When you reach the end of the row, fasten off. Make two of these strings. You are ready to sew the handles to the bag. You can see photo instructions below showing how to do that. Done!
Chart: how to start the crochet bag
This chart shows how to start the bag, i.e. how to make the first three rounds. The chart does not show ch 1 that you make in the beginning of each round because this chain does not count as a stitch.

Photo instructions for the spider stitch crochet bag
Round 1

1. Start with a chain. Then make sc in the second chain from your hook. Continue making sc until the end of the row.

2. Then make sc in the end of the chain, where you have just made your last sc.

3. Next make one more sc in the same st.

4. Then continue making sc on the other side of the chain. Make one sc in the end of the chain and join with a sl st to the fist sc of this round.
Round 4

5. Chain two.

6. Then make hdc in every st of the row.

7. Join with a sl st to the turning chain.
Round 6

8. This is how it looks after making 6 rounds.
Round 7

9. Now you have to change yarn color. Put your light lilac yarn in the front.

10. Chain one with your light lilac yarn.

11. Then pull the end of the dark lilac yarn tightly and secure the light lilac yarn. Now the color is changed and you are ready to work with your light lilac yarn.

12. Next chain one.

13. Now you will be working in the third loop only. The third loop is indicated in the picture.

14. Make sc-3lo in every st of this round.
Round 8

15. From round 8 you will start making the spider stitch. To begin, chain one.

16. Make a sc.

17. Chain one.

18. Then make another sc in the same st where you have just made the first sc.

19. Skip one st and make a sc in the next st.

20. Chain one.

21. Next make a sc in the same st where you have just made your last sc. Continue in the same manner until the end of the round.
Round 9

22. Spider stitch (continued). Don’t chain one.

23. Make a sc in the chain one space of the previous round.

24. Chain one.

25. Next make another sc in the same chain one space of the previous round.
Round 20

26. Don’t chain one. Make 2 sc in every chain one space of the prev round.
Round 21

27. Chain two. Make hdc in every st.
Round 22

28. Next change to the dark lilac yarn: chain one with the dark lilac yarn and pull the end of the light lilac yarn to secure the dark lilac yarn like it is shown in the picture.

29. Then chain two and make hdc-3lo in every st.
Round 23

30. Chain two and make hdc in every st.
Round 26

31. This is how it looks when all 26 rounds are completed.
Making the handles

32. Next make two strings that will be used for handles. You can see photo instructions below showing how to make a string.
Attaching the handles to the crochet bag

33. When you have two string ready, you will have to sew them to the bag. For sewing you can use your dark lilac yarn separated in half like it is shown in the picture. In the pictures I am using the light lilac yarn so it could be seen better.

34. Start with one around 3.5 cm from the side of the bag.

35. Insert the needle in the bag going all the way to the other side.

36. When you are working in the string, don’t go all the way to another side, keep the yarn just in the “bad” side like it is shown in the picture.

37. Continue until one end is fully attached to the bag.

38. Then measure 3.5 cm from the other side of the bag and attach the other end. In the same way align the other handle. Done!
Making the string

1. Start with a chain.

2. Now you will be working in the third loop of your chain which is behind ‘v’.

3. Insert your hook in the third loop of the chain and yarn over.

4. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

5. Pull the first loop through the other one. Now you have one loop on your hook. You have just made your first slip stitch.

6. In the photo you can see that after several stitches it starts looking like two chains stuck together. Continue making slip stitches in the third loop of the chain until the end of the row. Fasten off. Done!
