Crochet infinity scarf Calypso

I am happy to share a free pattern for a crochet infinity scarf Calypso! It is a simple project. Nevertheless, to help you along the way, I made some photo instructions showing the main steps how to make this scarf.

For this crochet infinity scarf I recommend choosing some thicker soft yarn. I used Strik & Smil from my local store, but you, of course, can use anything you like. The label of my yarn suggested using hook size 3.5-4.5 mm, but I used 6.0 mm hook. I think that using a larger hook helps to make the scarf softer. Finally, this infinity scarf is reversible! Each side looks different and they are both nice.

I must say that infinity scarfs are my favorite 🙂 You can take a look at my other free chunky infinity scarf pattern here.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thick yarn will work. I used 2 balls of: Strik & Smil 50% wool, 50% acryl, 100 g, color: blue/sand.
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label or larger. I used hook size 6.0.

Notes

The size of my scarf is 132.0 x 22.0 cm. You will be working in continuous rounds, which means that in the end of the round you don’t join with a sl st, but continue working in the top of your previous round. Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make the scarf. This infinity scarf is reversible and looks great from both sides.

Pattern

Start by chaining 145 (132 cm). The exact number of chains is not that important. Then join to the beginning of the chain with a sl st (make sure that the chain is not twisted before you join with a sl st).

Round 1: chain 2, hdc in the back of the chain until the end of the round. Don’t join with a sl st, start making round 2 in the the top of round 1 (see photo instructions below).

Round 2: hdc-3lo until the end of the row.

Round 3: sc-blo until the end of the row.

Round 4: hdc-blo until the end of the row.

Repeat rounds 2-4 until you reach the desired width of the scarf or until your run out of yarn. 🙂 I made 25 rounds. Then, make one sc-blo and one sl st as two last stitches to smoothen the edge of the scarf. Fasten off.

Photo instructions

Joining the ends of chain

1. Make 145 chains.

2. Before joining your long chain to its beginning, remember to check if it is not twisted. Then insert your hook in the first chain.

3. Yarn over.

4. Pull the yarn through. Now you will start working in rounds.

Round 1

5. Chain 2. You chain 2 only in the first round, in later rounds you don’t need to chain 2 because you will be working in continuous rounds.

6. Next yarn over and insert your hook in the back of your chain.

7. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

8. Yarn over.

9. Pull the yarn through all three loops. You have just made a half double crochet (hdc).

10. Continue making hdc until the end of the round.

Round 2

11. Don’t join with a sl st. Yarn over and insert your hook in the chain 2 that you made in the beginning of round 1.

12. Yarn over and pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

13. Yarn over and pull the yarn through all three loops. This is the first stitch in round 2.

14. Next insert your hook in the third loop of the next stitch. The third loop is behind “v”, on the bad side of your work.

15. Yarn over and pull the yarn through that third loop. Now you have three loops on your hook.

16. Yarn over and pull the yarn though all three loops. You have just made a half double crochet third loop only (hdc-3lo). Remember to put a marker in the first stitch of the round. If you don’t have a market, you can use a simple hair pin. Mark the beginning of the round in each round, otherwise it is easy to lose track.

17. When you will make more hdc-3lo, you will notice that the chain from the previous round can be seen in the front.

18. Continue making hdc-3lo until the end of the round.

Round 3

19. Then insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop.

20. Yarn over.

21. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

22. Yarn over and pull the yarn through both loops. You have just made a single crochet back loop only (sc-blo).

23. Continue making sc-blo until the end of the round.

Round 4

24. Then yarn over and insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop.

25. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

26. Yarn over. Pull the yarn through all three loops. You have just made a half double crochet back loop only (hdc-blo).

27. Pull the yarn through all three loops. You have just made a half double crochet back loop only (hdc-blo). Continue making hdc-blo until the end of the round. Then repeat rounds 2-4.

The “good” and the “bad” side

28. This is how the “good” side looks like.

29. And this is how the “bad” side looks like.
