Bags and pouches

Textured striped pouch

I wish you all happy New Year! Hopefully 2020 will bring piles of beautiful yarn and lots of new interesting crochet projects. In my first post of the year I want to share a beginner friendly pattern for a small pouch with a zipper. It is perfect for carrying cards or coins. Also, it is easy to adjust the size of this pouch, so you could use it as a make-up bag too.

This free pattern is not complicated as it includes only a couple of basic stitches (single crochets and half double crochets) and you should also know how to work in the third loop only. If you are not sure about the latter, you can check my photo tutorial here. I like how this combination of stitches gives a nice texture to the pouch and at the same time keeps it simple and clean.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used gray Madame tricote Almina 8/4 100% cotton yarn 50 g.
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 1.5.

Notes

You will be working in rounds. The size of my pouch is 13.5 x 9.5 cm. You can adjust the width of the pouch by choosing the length of your chain: chain until you reach the desired width of your pouch. Similarly, you can make any number of rows until you reach the desired height of the pouch. You will start by making a chain and then you will crochet around it to make the first round (you can take a look at the photo tutorial how to do that here). To keep the line where you join each round with a sl st straight, alternate where you make your first st of the round: in the first st of the prev round or in the second stitch. Remember that each round must contain the same number of stitches.

Pattern

Start by chaining any number of chains until you reach the desired length (the width of the pouch) + 1. For my pouch I chained 40 + 1.

Round 1: You will be working down the chain, then turn and work in the other side of the chain. Make sc in every st of the chain starting from the second chain from your hook. Turn. 1 sc in the end of the chain, make sc in every st until you come back to the beginning of the chain. 1 sc in the end of the chain. Join with a sl st to close the round.

Round 2: ch 2, hdc in every st of the prev round, join with a sl st.

Round 3: ch 2, hdc-3lo in every st of the prev round, join with a sl st.

Round 4: ch 1, sc in every st of the prev round, join with a sl st.

Round 5: ch 2, hdc in every st of the prev round, join with a sl st.

Round 6: ch 2, hdc-3lo in every st of the prev round, join with a sl st.

Round 7: repeat round 6.

Round 8: repeat round 6.

Round 9: repeat round 4.

Round 10-17: repeat rounds 2-9.

Round 18-25: repeat rounds 2-9.

Round 26-28: repeat rounds 2-4.

Fasten off. Sew in a zipper.

Enjoy your pouch!
