Small star stitch bag

This week I am sharing a pattern for a small star stitch bag. I really enjoyed making an alpine stitch bag, so I decided to make a similar item, but this time I used two colors and a different stitch, a beautiful star stitch. If you are not sure how to make this stitch, I prepared a photo tutorial showing how to do that (you can find it here). Even though I used thin yarn for my bag, the fabric of this pattern turned out quite thick.

Also, I include some photo instructions for the main steps. The instructions show how to start the bag, how to crochet the star stitch in a round, how to make the holes for the string and how to make the string. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me and I will try my best to help you out.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Madame tricote Almina 8/4 100% cotton yarn 50 g (sand and gray).
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 1.5.

Notes

The size of my bag is 8.0 x 12.5 cm. You will be working in rounds. This pattern uses the star stitch, which consists of two rows: a star stitch row (the first part) and a half double crochet row (the second part). Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make a bag and a string.

Pattern

The bag

Start by chaining 19 + 2 with gray yarn.

Round 1: You will be working down the chain, then turn and work in the other side of the chain. Make hdc in every st of the chain starting from the third chain from your hook. Turn. 1 hdc in the end of the chain, make hdc in every st (starting with the one you have just worked into; now that st has 3 hdc in total) until you come back to the beginning of the chain. 1 hdc in the end of the chain. Join with a sl st to the turning chain to close the round. In total you should have 41 st.

Round 21: ch 1, *2 sc-blo in the 2 sc of the prev round, 2 sc in the ch2 space of the prev round*, rep * * until the end of the round. Join with a sl st.

Round 22-23: repeat round 4-5.

Change to gray yarn.

Round 24-25: repeat round 8-9.

Fasten off.

Making the string

Start by chaining. The length of the chain should be around 28-30 cm long. Make a row of slip stitches in the third loop of the chain as it is shown in photo instructions below. When you reach the end of the row, fasten off. You are ready to weave in the string into your bag.

Photo instructions

Making the bag

1. Round 1. Start with a chain and make a row of hdc.

2. Round 1. When you reach the end of the row, make one hdc in the end (in the chain where you have just worked into).

3. Round 1. Make the third hdc in the same stitch (it counts as the first hdc on the other side of the chain).

4. Round 1. Continue down the row making hdc in every chain until you reach the end of the row.

5. Round 1. Make one more hdc in the end of the row (in the same stitch where you have just worked into).

6. Round 1. Join with a sl st to the turning chain. In total you should have 41 st in one round. Make sure that you keep the same number of stitches in every round.

7. Round 4. Ch 3 and make the first star stitch as usually.

8. Round 4. Continue making star stitches until the end of the round.

9. Round 4. Make one more hdc into the last stitch where you have just worked into.

10. Round 4. Join to the top of the star stitch with a sl st.

11. Round 5. Ch 2 and make 2 hdc in the eye of each star.

12. Round 5. Make one hdc into the last stitch, i. e. the hdc of the prev round. Then join with a sl st.

13. Round 20. Make the holes for the string.

14. This is how the finished bag and the string look.

Making the string

1. Start with a chain.

2. Now you will be working in the third loop of your chain which is behind ‘v’.

3. Insert your hook in the third loop of the chain and yarn over.

4. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

5. Pull the first loop through the other one. Now you have one loop on hour hook. You have just made your first slip stitch.

6. In the photo you can see that after several stitches it starts looking like two chains stuck together. Continue making slip stitches in the third loop of the chain until the end of the row. Fasten off. Done!

Enjoy your bag!
