Tapestry crochet zipper pouch Athena

This week’s free crochet pattern is for a tapestry crochet zipper pouch Athena. Some time ago I made a tapestry crochet basket, which has a Greek ornament called meander. I really like these ornaments, therefore, I wanted to make a zipper pouch with them too. I hope that you will enjoy making this zipper pouch as much as I did 🙂

If you are not sure how to sew in a zipper and attach lining, you can take a look at a tutorial here.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Strik & Smil “Art silk garn”, 100% viscose, 50 g (~140m), colors: white and gray.
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0.

Abbreviations (US terms)

Notes

The size of my pouch is 11.5 x 8.0 cm. You will be working in rounds. For this pattern you should be familiar with tapestry crochet (you can find the tutorial here). The photo instructions below show the main steps how to make a pouch. This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, but instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here). Except for the first round, every round is made in the same way: chain one, make 63 modified single crochets, join with a slip stitch. Follow the color chart showing how you should change colors.

Pattern

Start by chaining 32 with the gray yarn.

Round 1: To make the first round, you will be working down the chain, then turn and work on the other side of the chain. Make sc in every st of the chain starting from the second chain from your hook. Turn. 1 sc in the end of the chain, make sc in every st (starting with the one you have just worked into; now that st has 3 sc in total) until you come back to the beginning of the chain. 1 sc in the end of the chain. Add your white yarn like it is shown in the photo instructions below. Join with a sl st to the first sc of this round. In total you should have 64 st.

Follow the color chart for all the rounds until the end.

Round 2-20: ch 1, msc in every st of the previous round. Join with a sl st.

Fasten off and sew in a zipper.

Color chart for the tapestry crochet zipper pouch Athena

Color chart: Tapestry crochet zipper pouch Athena

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 64 stitches. Rows represent rounds. For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left. The chain that you make in the beginning of each round counts as a stitch.

The color chart shows only one half of the pattern (stitches 1-32 in each round). The other half of the pattern (stitches 33-64) is exactly the same.

Rules for changing color

The last msc of the round

Finish making your last msc of the round with the same color yarn as the first st of the round. For example, round 3 ends with a gray st and starts with a gray st, Therefore, finish the last st of round 3 with the gray yarn. Round 4 ends with a white st and starts with a gray st. Therefore, finish the last msc of round 4 with the gray yarn.

The slip stitch

The color of a sl st depends on the color of the first st in the next round. For example, round 3 ends with a gray st and round 4 starts with a gray st. Therefore, you should make a sl st in round 3 with the gray yarn. Round 5 ends with a white st and round 6 starts with a gray st. Therefore, you should make a sl st in round 5 with the gray yarn.

See photo instructions below showing how to change color.

Photo instructions for the tapestry crochet zipper pouch Athena

Round 1

1. Start by chaining 32.

2. Make a single crochet in the second chain from your hook.

3. Continue making single crochets until the end of the chain.

4. Then make one single crochet in the end of the chain.

5. Turn your work and make one more single crochet in the same stitch.

6. Then continue making single crochets in every stitch until you reach the end.

7. Make one single crochet in the end of the chain. In total you should have 64 stitches.

8. To join with a slip stitch, insert your hook in the first single crochet of this round. Then take your white yarn.

9. The first stitch in round 2 is white, therefore, you have to change color and make a slip stitch with the white yarn. So, yarn over the white yarn and pull it through.

Round 2

10. Chain one.

11. Then insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop. Your hook should go under the gray yarn like it is shown in the picture.

12. Yarn over the white yarn.

13. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

14. Next, yarn under the white yarn.

15. Pull the yarn through. You have just made a modified single crochet. Notice that the gray yarn is wrapped around with the white yarn.

16. Keep making modified single crochets until the end of the round. The first stitch in this round was white, therefore, finish the last stitch of this round with the white yarn.

17. To join with a slip stitch, insert your hook in the chain one that you made in the beginning of this round.

18. The first stitch in round 3 should be gray, therefore, you should make a slip stitch with the gray yarn. So, yarn over the gray yarn.

19. Pull the yarn through.

Round 3

20. The second stitch in round 3 should be white. This means that you should start changing the yarn color: make a chain with the white yarn (it will become the top of the second stitch).

21. Start making a modified single crochet in the next stitch with the white yarn, but don’t finish it.

22. The next stitch should be gray. This means, that you should finish the second stitch with the gray yarn.

23. Make two full modified single crochets with the gray yarn. Then start making the third one, but don’t finish it.

24. The next stitch should be white, therefore, you have to change yarn color again.

25. Keep following the color chart and instructions describing how to change yarn color.

Thank you so much for this very nice pattern. The explanations are very clear for a tapestry crochet beginner. Please I have one question. If I want to do a larger pouch, are the stitchs numbers a multiple of 8 ?(I am sorry I am not good in mathematics 🙁

Hi Ada! Thank you, I am glad that you like this pattern 🙂 Yes, if you would like to make this pouch bigger, just make multiples of 8. Have a great weekend!
