Christmas crochet drawstring bag Grace

Materials

• Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Tencel 100% lyocell, 50 g = 141 m, colors: red (318291) and white (318290)
• Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used a 2.0 mm hook.

Abbreviations (US terms)

• ch: chain
• sl st: slip stitch
• sc: single crochet
• sc inc: single crochet increase
• prev: previous
• st: stitch
• rep **: repeat from * to *

Notes

The diameter of my bag is 7.0 cm and the height is 12.0 cm.

You will work in rounds. This pattern uses the iris stitch. Photo instructions below show how to make this stitch. To make a single crochet increase simply make two single crochets in the same stitch. Each round of the base starts with chaining one. This chain one does not count as a stitch and at the end of each round you should join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet of that round. Weave in the string in the holes of round 23.

Pattern

The bag

Start by making a magic (adjustable) ring with the red yarn.

Round 1: 8 sc in the magic ring, join with a sl st. (8 st in total)

Round 2: ch 1, sc inc in every st, join with a sl st. (16 st)

Round 3: ch 1, *sc, sc inc*, rep ** 8 times, join with a sl st. (24 st)

Round 4: ch 1, 2 sc, *sc inc, 2 sc*, rep ** 7 times, sc inc, join with a sl st. (32 st)

Round 5: ch 1, 3 sc, *sc inc, 3 sc*, rep ** 7 times, sc inc, join with a sl st. (40 st)

Round 6: ch 1, 4 sc, *sc inc, 4 sc*, rep ** 7 times, sc inc, join with a sl st. (48 st)

Round 7: ch 1, 5 sc, *sc inc, 5 sc*, rep ** 7 times, sc inc, join with a sl st. (56 st)

Round 8: ch 1, 6 sc, *sc inc, 6 sc*, rep ** 7 times, sc inc, join with a sl st. (64 st)

Round 9: ch 1, sc in every stitch, join with a sl st. (64 st)

The bottom of the bag is finished.

Round 10: ch 3 (it counts as a stitch), dc in the first stitch, ch 1, 2 dc in the same stitch, *skip 3 st and in the next one make: 2 dc, ch 1 and 2dc*, rep ** until the end of the round, join with a sl st to the ch3. (64 st)

Round 11-24: sl st to the next stitch, sl st to the ch1 space, ch3, in the same ch1 space make: 1 dc, ch 1, 2 dc, *in the next ch1 space make: 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc*, rep ** until the end of the round, join with a sl st. (64 st)

Make the first two slip stitches of the next round with the red yarn and then change yarn color to white.

Round 25-28: repeat round 11.

Fasten off.

Making the string

Start by chaining. The length of the chain should be around 38-40 cm long. Make a row of slip stitches in the third loop of the chain. You can find a detailed tutorial here. When you reach the end of the row, fasten off. You are ready to weave in the string into your bag. Done!

14. This is how the base of the bag looks when 9 rounds are completed.

Round 10

15. In round 10 you will start making the iris stitch. So, chain three. It counts as a stitch.

16. Then make a double crochet in the first stitch.

17. Chain one and make two more double crochets in the same stitch.

18. Then repeat: skip three stitches and in the fourth one make two double crochets, chain one and make two more double crochets in the same stitch.

19. Continue working in the same way until the end of the round.

20. At the end of the round join with a slip stitch to the chain three.

Round 11

21. Make a slip stitch in the double crochet of the previous round. So, insert your hook in the top of the double crochet and yarn over.

22. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

23. Pull the first loop through the second one.

24. Then make a slip stitch in the chain one space. So, insert your hook in the chain one space and yarn over.

25. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

26. Pull the first loop through the second one. Now you are ready to start making the iris stitch.

27. Chain three.

28. Make a double crochet in the same chain one space.

29. Chain one.

30. Make two more double crochets in the same chain one space.

31. Then repeat: in the next chain one space make two double crochets, chain one and make two more double crochets.

32. Continue working in the same way until the end of the round.

33. At the end of the round join with a slip stitch to the chain three.

Round 25

34. In round 25 you have to change yarn color. So, with the red yarn make two slip stitches as usually and then chain one with the white yarn.

35. Pull the end of the red yarn to tighten and secure the white yarn. Now the white yarn is ready to use.

Pattern

The bag

Start by chaining 24 with the red yarn.

Round 1: To make the first round, you will work down the chain, then turn and work in the other side of the chain. Make sc in every st of the chain starting from the second chain from your hook. Turn. 1 sc in the end of the chain, make sc in every st (starting with the one you have just worked into; now that st has 3 sc in total) until you come back to the beginning of the chain. 1 sc in the end of the chain. In total you should have 48 st.

Round 2-3: sc in every st until the end of the round.

Round 4: 2 sc in the first stitch, *skip one st, 2 sc in the next stitch*, rep ** until the end of the round.

Change yarn color to white.

Round 5-15: 2 sc in the center of the second sc, *skip one st, 2 sc in the center of the next st*, rep ** until the end of the round. Change yarn color.

Round 16: repeat round 5.

Continue working with the red yarn.

Round 17-33: sc in every stitch until the end of the round.

Making the holes for the string:

Round 34: sc, *ch 2, skip 2 st of the previous round, 2 sc*, rep ** 11 times. ch 2, skip 2 st of the previous round, sc.

Round 35: sc, *2 sc in the ch2 space of the previous round, 2 sc*, rep ** 11 times. 2 sc in the ch2 space of the previous round, sc.

Round 36: sc in every st until the end of the round.

Round 37: 2 sc in the first stitch, *skip one st, 2 sc in the next stitch*, rep ** until the end of the round.

Change yarn color to white.

Round 38-40: 2 sc in the center of the second sc, *skip one st, 2 sc in the center of the next st*, rep ** until the end of the round. Change yarn color.

Round 41: repeat round 38.

Continue working with the red yarn.

Round 42: sc in every stitch until the end of the round.

In the end make 3 additional sl st in the next 3 st to even out the edge. Fasten off.

Making the string

Start by chaining. The length of the chain should be around 28-30 cm long. Make a row of slip stitches in the third loop of the chain. You can find a detailed photo tutorial here. When you reach the end of the row, fasten off. You are ready to weave in the string into your bag. Done!

17. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here).

The bag

Start by chaining 24 with black yarn.

Now add orange yarn and follow the color chart for all rounds until the end.

Round 2-24: msc in every st of the prev round.

Making the holes for the string:

Round 25: msc, *ch2, skip 2 st of the prev round, 2 msc*, rep ** 11 times. ch 2, skip 2 st of the prev round, msc.

Round 26: msc, *2 msc in the ch2 space of the prev round (make sure to grab the loose yarn hanging in the ch2 space in the prev round too), 2 msc*, rep ** 11 times. 2 msc in the ch2 space of the prev round, msc.

Round 27-31: msc in every st of the prev round.

In the end make 4 additional sl st in the back loop only in the next 4 st to even out the edge. Fasten off.

Making the string

Start by chaining. The length of the chain should be around 28-30 cm long. Make a row of slip stitches in the third loop of the chain as it is shown in photo instructions below. When you reach the end of the row, fasten off. You are ready to weave in the string into your bag. Done!

Color chart

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 48 stitches (48 columns in the chart). Rows represent rounds. For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left.

In the chart, empty squares indicate where you should make holes for the string. When you chain 2 for a hole, you cannot hide the yarn you are not working with: it will be ‘hanging’ in the hole. Don’t worry, when you will make round 26, you will grab both yarns you need to hide: the one in round 26 and the one in round 25. See photo instructions.

Round 1

Round 2

10. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook. In round 2 you have to introduce the orange yarn. So, take your orange yarn and put it behind your hook and in front of the black yarn like it is shown in the picture.

11. Yarn under the black yarn.

12. Pull the yarn through. Notice how the orange yarn is wrapped around with the black yarn.

13. Then insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop.

14. Yarn over the black yarn.

15. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

16. Yarn under the black yarn.

17. Pull the yarn through. You have just made a modified single crochet.

18. Start making another modified single crochet but stop when you have two loops on your hook. The next stitch should be orange, so you have to change yarn color.

19. Put the orange yarn up and yarn under.

20. Pull the yarn through. Now the orange yarn is ready to use.

21. Start making the next stitch with the orange yarn but stop when you have two loops on your hook because you have to change yarn color again.

22. So, put the black yarn up and complete the stitch with the black yarn.

23. Then make two full modified single crochets with the black yarn, start making the third one, but complete it with the orange yarn.

24. Start making the the next stitch with the orange yarn, but complete it with the black yarn because the next stitch should be black.

25. Complete the last stitch in round 2 with the orange yarn because the first stitch in round 3 is orange. Continue following the color chart.

Round 25

26. In round 25 you have to make holes for a string. Make one modified single crochet.

27. Then chain two.

28. Skip two stitches of the previous round and make a modified single crochet in the next stitch. You can see that the black yarn is hanging in the hole. That is fine.

29. Make another modified single crochet in the next stitch.

30. Keep working in the same way until the end of the round: chain two, skip two stitches and make two modified single crochets in the next two stitches.

Round 26

31. Make one modified single crochet.

32. Then insert your hook in the chain two space grabbing both black yarns like it is shown in the picture.

33. Yarn over the orange yarn.

34. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

35. Yarn under the orange yarn.

36. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook.

37. Make one more modified single crochet in the chain two space of the previous round.

38. Then make two modified single crochets in the next two stitches.

39. Make two modified single crochets in the next chain two space of the previous round and two modified single crochets in the next two stitches. Continue working in the same way until the end of the round.

Round 31

40. When you are done with round 31, you need to make a few slip stitches in the back loop only to even out the edge.

41. So, leave the orange yarn aside and insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop.

42. Yarn over the black yarn.

43. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

44. Next pull the first loop through the second one. You have just made a slip stitch back loop only.

45. Make three more slip stitches back loop only in the next three stitches. Fasten off.

14. Start making the fourth stitch with the orange yarn but stop when you have two loops on your hook. The next stitch is black, so you have to change yarn color.

15. Complete the fourth stitch with the black yarn.

16. Then make two full modified single crochets with the black yarn, start making the third one but complete it with the orange yarn.

17. Start making the next stitch with the orange yarn, but complete it with the black yarn because you have to change yarn color again.

18. Continue following the color chart until the end of the row. Complete the last stitch of the row with the orange yarn because the first stitch in round 18 is orange.

Round 18

21. In round 64 you have to make holes for a string. Make one modified single crochet.

22. Then chain two.

23. Skip two stitches of the previous round and make two modified single crochets in the next two stitches. You can see that the orange yarn is hanging in the hole. That is fine.

24. Keep working in the same way until the end of the round: chain two, skip two stitches and make two modified single crochets in the next two stitches.

Round 65

25. Make one modified single crochet.

26. Then insert your hook in the chain two space grabbing both orange yarns like it is shown in the picture.

27. Yarn over the black yarn.

28. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook. Then yarn under.

29. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook.

30. Make one more modified single crochet in the chain two space of the previous round.

31. Then make two modified single crochets in the next two stitches.

32. Make two modified single crochets in the next chain two space of the previous round and two modified single crochets in the next two stitches. Continue working in the same way until the end of the round.

Round 72

33. When you are done with round 72, you need to make a few slip stitches in the back loop only to even out the edge.

34. So, leave the orange yarn aside and insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop.

35. Yarn over the black yarn.

36. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

Materials

• Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Madame Tricot Paris Almina 8/4 mercerized cotton 100% 50 g = 169 m. Colors: pink and black.
• Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used a 2.0 mm hook.
• A zipper and lining if you wish to attach it.

The size of my pouch is 11.5 x 8.5 cm.

Photo instructions below show how to make a zipper pouch. For this pattern you should be familiar with the tapestry crochet (you can find the tutorial here). This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here).

You will work in continuous rounds, which means that in the end of a round you don’t join with a slip stitch, but instead continue making modified single crochets in the top of the first stitch of the round. Remember to use a marker showing the beginning of each round. Follow the color chart showing how you should change colors.

Pattern

Start by chaining 40 with black yarn.

Round 1: To make the first round, you will work down the chain, then turn and work in the other side of the chain. Make sc in every st of the chain starting from the second chain from your hook. Turn. 1 sc in the end of the chain, make sc in every st (starting with the one you have just worked into; now that st has 3 sc in total) until you come back to the beginning of the chain. 1 sc in the end of the chain. In total you should have 80 st. Don’t join with a sl st, instead continue with the next round.

Now add pink yarn and follow the color chart for all rounds until the end.

Round 2-25: msc in every st of the prev round.

When you complete round 25, make 3 sl st in the back loop only in the next 3 stitches to even out the edge. Fasten off and sew in a zipper.

How to read the chart

Above you can see a color pattern for the zipper pouch. Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 80 stitches. The chart above shows only one half of the pattern (columns 1-40 in the chart). Columns 41-80 are the same as columns 1-40. Rows represent rounds. For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left.

Round 1

1. Start by chaining 40 with black yarn. You will start working in the second chain from your hook.

2. So, make a single crochet in the second chain from your hook.

3. Keep making single crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

4. Then make one single crochet in the end of the chain.

5. Turn your work and make one more single crochet in the same stitch.

6. Then continue making single crochets in every stitch until you reach the end.

7. Make one single crochet in the end of the chain. In total you should have 80 stitches.

Round 2

8. Don’t join with a slip stitch. Instead insert your hook in the top of the first single crochet of the first round grabbing just the back loop. Yarn over.

9. Pull the through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

10. In round 2 you have to introduce the pink yarn. So, take your pink yarn and put it behind your hook and in front of the black yarn like it is shown in the picture.

11. Yarn under the black yarn.

12. Pull the yarn through. Notice how the pink yarn is wrapped around with the black yarn.

13. Then insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop.

14. Yarn over the black yarn.

15. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

16. The next stitch is pink, so you have to change working yarn color. Put the pink yarn up.

17. Yarn under the pink yarn.

18. Pull the yarn through. You have just made a modified single crochet! And now your pink yarn is ready to use.

19. Make another modified single crochet in the next stitch with the pink yarn.

20. Then start making the second one, but stop when you have two loops on your hook. The next stitch should be black, so you have to change yarn color again.

21. Complete the stitch with the black yarn.

22. Then continue to follow the color chart.

23. Work in the same way until the end of the row. Complete the last stitch of the row with the pink yarn because the first stitch in round 3 should be pink.

Round 3

24. So, start making the first stitch in round 3 with the pink yarn, but complete it with the black yarn, because the second stitch should be black.

25. Then make one full modified single crochet with the black yarn, start making the next one, but complete it with the pink yarn, because the next stitch should be pink.

26. Continue to follow the color chart until the end of the pattern.

Round 25

27. When you complete round 25, you have to make three slip stitches in the back loop only to even out the edge. So, put the pink yarn away.

28. Insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop and yarn over the black yarn.

29. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

30. Pull the first loop through the second one. You have just made a slip stitch back loop only!

*When you have 4 stitches left in round 17, make a sl st in the back loop only in the last 4 stitches to even out the edge. Fasten off and sew in a zipper.

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 104 stitches. The chart above shows only one half of the pattern, the front side of the pouch (columns 1-52 in the chart). Columns 53-104 are the same as column 1, which means they are all light lilac. Rows represent rounds. For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left.

How to adjust the size

Round 1

1. Start by chaining 52 with light lilac yarn. You will start working in the second chain from your hook.

2. So, make a single crochet in the second chain from your hook.

3. Keep making single crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

4. Then make one single crochet in the end of the chain.

5. Turn your work and make one more single crochet in the same stitch.

6. Then continue making single crochets in every stitch until you reach the end.

7. Make one single crochet in the end of the chain. In total you should have 104 stitches.

Round 2

8. Don’t join with a slip stitch. Instead insert your hook in the top of the first single crochet of the first round grabbing just the back loop.

9. Yarn over.

17. Pull the yarn through. You have just made a modified single crochet. Don’t forget to put a market indicating the first stitch of this round.

18. The 15th stitch in round 2 should be grey. So, don’t complete the 14th stitch, stop when you have two loops on your hook, because you need to change yarn color.

19. Put the grey yarn up and yarn under.

20. Pull the yarn through. Now your grey yarn is ready to use.

21. Make the next stitch with the grey yarn.

22. The 23rd stitch in round 2 should be light lilac. So, start making the 22nd stitch with the grey yarn, but stop when you have two loops on your hook, because you have to change yarn color.

23. Then put the light lilac yarn up and yarn under.

24. Pull the yarn through. The light lilac yarn is ready to use again.

25. The 30th stitch in round 2 should be grey. So, complete the 29th stitch with the grey yarn.

26. Continue to follow the color chart until the end of the round.

Round 3

27. To start round 3, remove the marker and continue making modified single crochets.

28. In round 3, the 14th stitch should be grey. So, complete the 13th stitch with the grey yarn.

29. Then start making in the 14th stitch with the grey yarn, but stop when you have two loops on your hook. The next stitch is light lilac and you have to change yarn color again.

30. So, complete the 14th stitch with the light lilac yarn.

31. Start making the 15th stitch with the light lilac yarn, but stop when you have two loops on your hook.

32. The 16th stitch is grey. So, complete the 15th stitch with the grey yarn.

33. Continue working in the same way following the color chart.

Round 17

34. In round 17, stop when you have four stitches left. You will even out the edge.

35. So, put the grey yarn aside, insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop and yarn over.

36. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

37. Pull the first loop through the second one. You have just made a slip stitch back loop only.

Pattern

Start by chaining 24 with sand color yarn (you can adjust the size by chaining more or less, but it should be a multiple of three).

Turn. 1 sc in the end of the chain, make sc in every st (starting with the one you have just worked into; now that st has 3 sc in total) until you come back to the beginning of the chain. 1 sc in the end of the chain. Join with a sl st to the first sc of this round. In total you should have 48 st (or a multiple of six).

Round 2: ch 3 (counts as a st), 2 dc in the next two st, *ch 3, skip 3 st, 3 dc in the next 3 st*, rep ** until the end of the round, ch 3, join with a sl st to the chain three.

Change yarn color to blue.

5. Then make single crochets in every stitch starting with the one you have just worked into; now that stitch has 3 single crochets in total.

6. Keep making single crochets until you come back to the beginning of the chain.

7. Then make one single crochet in the end of the chain. Now you have 48 stitches (or a multiple of six).

8. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet of this round.

Round 2

9. Chain three. It counts as a stitch.

10. Then make two double crochets in the next two stitches (in the second and the third single crochet of the previous round).

11. Chain three.

12. Skip three stitches and make three double crochets in the next three stitches.

13. Chain three, skip three stitches and make three double crochets in the next three stitches.

14. Work in the same way until the end of the round. The round should end with three chains.

15. To complete the round, join with a slip stitch to the chain three that you made in the beginning of this round.

16. For round 3 you have to change yarn color. So, chain one with the blue yarn. You don’t have to cut the sand yarn, you can carry it inside the phone case.

17. Then pull the end of the sand color yarn to tighten up and secure the blue yarn.

Round 3

18. Starting with round 3 you will change the direction in which you are working every round. In order to do that, turn your work inside out and work from right to left as usually. If you don’t cut yarn every row, have in mind that you have to carry it on a “bad” side. Now the “bad” side is out.

19. You will make three double crochets in the three single crochets two rounds below (in round 1). So, yarn over.

20. Insert your hook in the first single crochet two rounds below and yarn over.

21. Pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

22. Yarn over.

23. Pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook. Now you have two loops on your hook.

24. Yarn over.

25. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You have just made a double crochet working two rounds below!

26. Make two more double crochets in the next two stitches two rounds below.

27. Chain three.

28. Then skip three double crochets of the previous round and make three double crochets in the next three stitches two rounds below.

29. Continue working in the same way until the end of the round: chain three, skip three double crochets of the previous round and make three double crochets in the next three stitches two rounds below.

30. The round should end with three chains.

31. To complete the round, join with a slip stitch to the first double crochet of this round. Before joining with the slip stitch, make sure that the yarn that you are carrying is on the “bad” side, which in this round is out.

32. Then change yarn color to green in the same way as before.

Round 4

33. Then repeat round 3. Chain one.

34. Turn your work inside out.

35. Make three double crochets in the first three stitches two rounds below.

36. Chain three.

37. Skip three double crochets of the previous round and make three double crochets in the three stitches two rounds below.

38. Continue working in the same way until the end of the round.

39. The round will end with three chains.

40. To complete the round, join with a slip stitch to the first double crochet of this round. Make sure that all yarns that you are carrying are inside the case, since in this round the “bad” side is inside.

41. Change yarn color to sand.

Round 5

42. Then chain one and turn your work inside out. Repeat round 3.

43. Make three double crochets in the first three stitches two rounds below.

44. Chain three, skip three double crochets of the previous round and make three double crochets in the three stitches two rounds below. Continue working in the same way (repeating round 3) until you reach the desired height for your phone case.

The last round (Round 38)

45. The case would look nicer if you could crochet the last round when the “bad” side of the case is inside. Start the last round as usually: chain one and turn your work inside out. Now the “bad” side should be inside.

46. Make three double crochets in the first three stitches two rounds below.

47. Instead of chaining three, make three single crochets in the three double crochets of the previous round.

48. Then make three double crochets in the three stitches two rounds below and three single crochets in the next three double crochets of the previous round.

49. Continue working in the same way until the end of the round. At the end of the round, join with a slip stitch to the first double crochet of this round and fasten off.
