Abbreviations (US terms)

Notes

The size of my dishcloth is 16.5 x 15.0 cm. You will be working in rows. The photo instructions below show the main steps for making this dishcloth.

Pattern

Start by chaining 44.

Row 1: sc in the 2nd ch from your hook, sc in every st until the end of the row.

Row 2: ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc in the 1st st, sc in every st until the end of the row.

Row 3-7: ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc-blo in the 1st st, sc-blo in every st until the end of the row.

Row 8-10: ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc in the 1st st, sc in every st until the end of the row.

Row 11-42: repeat rows 3-10.

Spooky Halloween potholder

Abbreviations (US terms)

Notes

The size of my potholder is 17.0 x 16.5 cm.

This pattern uses the tapestry crochet technique (you can find the tutorial here). The photo instructions below show how to make a potholder. This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here).

You will work in continuous rounds, which means that in the end of a round you don’t join with a slip stitch, but instead continue making modified single crochets in the top of the first stitch of the round. Remember to use a marker showing the beginning of each round. Follow the color chart showing how you should change colors.

Pattern

Start by chaining 52 with black yarn.

Round 1: To make the first round, you will work down the chain, then turn and work in the other side of the chain. Make sc in every st of the chain starting from the second chain from your hook. Turn. 1 sc in the end of the chain, make sc in every st (starting with the one you have just worked into; now that st has 3 sc in total) until you come back to the beginning of the chain. 1 sc in the end of the chain. In total you should have 104 st. Don’t join with a sl st, instead continue with the next round.

Now add orange yarn and follow the color chart for all rounds until the end.

Round 2-43: msc in every st of the prev round.

In the end make 4 additional sl st in the back loop only in the next 4 st to even out the edge. Fasten off and sew the both sides of the potholder together.

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 104 stitches. The color chart above shows only a half of the pattern: stitches 53-104 of each round (columns 53-104 in the chart). Columns 1-52 are the same as column 53 (rows 1, 2, 42 and 43 are black, the rest of the rows are orange). Rows represent rounds. For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left.

Round 1

1. Start by chaining 52 with black yarn. You will start working in the second chain from your hook.

2. So, make a single crochet in the second chain from your hook.

3. Keep making single crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

4. Then make one single crochet in the end of the chain.

5. Turn your work and make one more single crochet in the same stitch.

6. Then continue making single crochets in every stitch until you reach the end.

7. Make one single crochet in the end of the chain. In total you should have 104 stitches.

Round 2

8. Don’t join with a slip stitch. Instead insert your hook in the top of the first single crochet of the first round grabbing just the back loop.

9. Yarn over.

10. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook. In round 2 you have to introduce the orange yarn. So, take your orange yarn and put it behind your hook and in front of the black yarn like it is shown in the picture.

11. Yarn under the black yarn.

12. Pull the yarn through. Notice how the orange yarn is wrapped around with the black yarn.

13. Then insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop.

14. Yarn over the black yarn.

15. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

16. Yarn under the black yarn.

17. Pull the yarn through. You have just made a modified single crochet.

18. Continue working in the same way until the end of the row. Don’t complete the last stitch of the row, stop when you have two loops on your hook. The first stitch in round 3 is orange. This means that you have to change yarn color.

19. So, put the orange yarn up.

20. Yarn under.

21. Pull the yarn through. Now the orange yarn is ready to use.

Round 3

22. Continue to work with the orange yarn in round 3.

Round 5

23. In round 5 the 73rd stitch is black. So, complete the 72nd stitch with the black yarn.

24. Start making the the 73rd stitch with the black yarn, but stop when you have two loops on your hook. Next stitch is orange, so you have to change yarn color again.

25. Complete the 73rd stitch with the orange yarn.

26. Then start making the 74th stitch with the orange yarn, but complete it with the black yarn, because the next stitch is black.

27. Start making the next stitch with the black yarn, but complete it with the orange yarn, because the next stitch is orange.

28. Continue following the color chart until the end of the pattern.

Round 43

29. When you complete round 43, you have to even out the edge by making four slip stitches in the back loop only.

30. So, put the orange yarn aside and insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop.

31. Yarn over.

32. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

33. Pull the first loop through the second one. You have just made a slip stitch back loop only.

34. Make three more slip stitches in the back loop only. Then fasten off and sew both sides of the potholder together.

Potholder with Christmas ornaments

Pattern

Start by chaining 54 with white yarn.

Turn. 1 sc in the end of the chain, make sc in every st (starting with the one you have just worked into; now that st has 3 sc in total) until you come back to the beginning of the chain. 1 sc in the end of the chain. In total you should have 108 st. Don’t join with a sl st, instead continue with the next round.

Now add blue yarn and follow the color chart for all rounds until the end.

Round 2-45: msc in every st of the prev round.

In the end make a sl st in the back loop only in the next st to even out the edge. Fasten off. Cut the white yarn so it would be around three times the width of the potholder and sew together both sides like it is shown in the photo instructions.

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. In each round you have 108 stitches. The chart above shows only one half of the pattern, the front side of the potholder (columns 1-54 in the chart). Columns 55-108 are the same as column 1. Rows represent rounds. For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left.

2. So, make a single crochet in the second chain from your hook.

3. Keep making single crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

7. Make one single crochet in the end of the chain. In total you should have 108 stitches.

Round 2

16. Yarn under the white yarn.

17. Pull the yarn through. You have just made a modified single crochet.

18. Keep working in the same way until the end of the round. When you make the last modified single crochet, don’t finish it, stop when you have two loops on your hook. The first stitch in round 3 should be blue, therefore, you need to change yarn color.

19. So, put the blue yarn up and yarn under.

20. Pull the yarn through. Now your blue yarn is ready to use.

Round 3

21. Make the next stitch with the blue yarn.

Round 4

22. The 27th stitch in round 4 should be white. So, start making the 26th stitch with the blue yarn, but stop when you have two loops on your hook, because you have to change yarn color.

23. Then put the white yarn up. Yarn under and pull the yarn through. The white yarn is ready to use again.

24. Start making the 27th stitch, but don’t complete it, because you have to change color again.

25. So, complete the 27th stitch with the blue yarn.

26. Continue to follow the color chart.

Round 45

27. When you complete round 45, you have to even out the edge by making a slip stitch in the back loop only. So, leave the blue yarn aside and insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop.

28. Yarn over and pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

29. Then pull the first loop through the second one. You have just made a slip stitch in the back loop only.

30. Cut the blue yarn and weave in its end. Then cut the white yarn so it would be around three times the width of the potholder. Take your tapestry needle and insert it like it is shown in the picture.

31. Pull the yarn through. Then insert your needle in the middle of the chain where the white yarn is coming from.

32. Pull the yarn through.

33. Now you have to close the potholder by sewing both sides together. So, insert your needle in two opposite chains grabbing the loops that are closer to the inside.

34. Pull the yarn through. Do the same for the next two chains.

35. Continue working in the same way until you reach the end. Fasten off.

Crochet dishcloth Clara

Abbreviations (US terms)

• st: stitch
• ch: chain
• sc: single crochet
• dc: double crochet

Notes

The size of my dishcloth is 16.5 x 15.0 cm. You will be working in rows. This pattern uses the lemon peel stitch. The photo instructions below show how to make this stitch. The lemon peel stitch is a repeat of one row and consists of alternating single and double crochets. The size of the dishcloth can be easily adjusted by chaining more or less in the beginning (keep in mind that it should be an odd number of chains) and repeating rows 3-10 until you form a nice rectangle.

Pattern

Start by chaining 39 (you can adjust the size by chaining more or less, but it should be an odd number of chains).

Row 1: In the second chain from your hook make a sc (in the back of the chain). Then keep making scs until the end of the row.

Row 2: ch 1 (it does not count as a st), sc in every st of the row.

Change yarn color to grey.

Row 3: ch 1 (it does not count as a st). *sc, dc*, rep * * until the end of the row.

Row 4-8: repeat row 3.

Change yarn color to green.

Row 9-10: repeat row 2.

Change yarn color to grey.

Row 11-16: repeat row 3.

Change yarn color to green.

Row 17-18: repeat row 2.

Change yarn color to grey.

Row 19-24: repeat row 3.

Change yarn color to green.

Row 25-26: repeat row 2.

Change yarn color to grey.

Row 27-32: repeat row 3.

Change yarn color to green.

Row 33-34: repeat row 2.

Fasten off.

Row 1

1. Start by chaining 39. You will work in the second chain from your hook.

2. Insert your hook in the second chain from your hook (in the back of the chain) and make a single crochet.

3. Make single crochets until the end of the row.

4. Then chain one.

Row 2

5. Turn your work around. Now you will work in the very first stitch like it is shown in the picture.

6. So, make a single crochet.

7. Then make single crochets in every stitch until the end of the row.

8. In row 3 you will have to work with the grey yarn, therefore, you need to change color. So, take your grey yarn and chain one.

9. Then pull the end of the green yarn to tighten and secure the grey yarn. Now your grey yarn is ready to use.

10. Chain one.

Row 3

11. Turn your work around. Now you will make the lemon peel stitch. You will start working in the very first stitch like it is indicated in the picture.

12. So, make a single crochet in the very first stitch.

13. Then make a double crochet in the next stitch.

14. Make a single crochet in the next stitch,

15. Then make a double crochet in the next one.

16. Keep alternating single and double crochets until the end of the row. Your last stitch should be a double crochet.

17. Then chain one.

Row 4

18. Turn your work around. You will repeat row 3. As before, you will start working in the very first stitch.

19. So, make a single crochet.

20. Then make a double crochet in the next stitch.

21. Then make a single crochet in the next one.

22. And then make a double crochet in the next one.

23. Keep working in the same way until the end of the row.

Row 8

24. In row 9 you will have to use the green yarn, so you need to change yarn color. Chain one with the green yarn.

25. Then pull the end of the grey yarn to secure the green yarn. Now it is ready to use.

26. Chain one.

Row 9

27. Turn your work around. You will start working in the very first stitch.

28. So, make a single crochet in the very first stitch.

29. Keep making single crochets until the end of the row.

Row 10

30. Then chain one and turn your work around. You will start working in the very first stitch.

31. Make single crochets in every stitch of the row. Then repeat rows 3-10 until the end of the pattern.
