Here is a free crochet pattern for the Christmas crochet basket Jane. It is quite easy and fast to make.

For this cute Christmas crochet project you will need two colors of yarn. Any thin yarn will work, however, mercerized cotton works especially well for this project. I use lyocell yarn, which is not fuzzy and looks very nice.

Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Tencel 100% lyocell, 50 g = 141 m, colors: red (318291) and white (318290)
Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used a 2.0 mm hook.

Abbreviations (US terms)

ch: chain
sl st: slip stitch
sc: single crochet
sc inc: single crochet increase
prev: previous
st: stitch
rep **: repeat from * to *

Notes

The diameter of my basket is 10.0 cm, the height is 4.0 cm (8.0 cm when not folded in).

You will work in rounds. This pattern uses the two single crochet stitch. Photo instructions below show how to make this stitch. To make a single crochet increase simply make two single crochets in the same stitch. Each round starts with chaining one. This chain one does not count as a stitch. At the end of each round you should join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet of that round.

Pattern

Start by making a magic (adjustable) ring with the red yarn.

Round 1: 8 sc in the magic ring, join with a sl st. (8 st in total)

Round 2: ch 1, sc inc in every st, join with a sl st. (16 st)

Round 3: ch 1, *sc, sc inc*, rep ** 8 times, join with a sl st. (24 st)

Round 4: ch 1, 2 sc, *sc inc, 2 sc*, rep ** 7 times, sc inc, join with a sl st. (32 st)

Round 5: ch 1, 3 sc, *sc inc, 3 sc*, rep ** 7 times, sc inc, join with a sl st. (40 st)

Round 6: ch 1, 4 sc, *sc inc, 4 sc*, rep ** 7 times, sc inc, join with a sl st. (48 st)

Round 7: ch 1, 5 sc, *sc inc, 5 sc*, rep ** 7 times, sc inc, join with a sl st. (56 st)

Round 8: ch 1, 6 sc, *sc inc, 6 sc*, rep ** 7 times, sc inc, join with a sl st. (64 st)

The bottom of the basket is finished.

Round 13-14: ch 1, sc in every stitch, join with a sl st. (96 st)

Round 15: ch 1, 2 sc in the very first stitch, *skip one st, 2 sc in the next stitch*, rep ** until the end of the round, join with a sl st. (96 st)

Change yarn color to white.

Round 16-26: ch 1, 2 sc in the center of the second sc, *skip one st, 2 sc in the center of the next st*, rep ** until the end of the round, join with a sl st. (96 st) Change yarn color.

Round 27: repeat round 16.

Continue working with the red yarn.

Round 28-40: ch 1, sc in every stitch, join with a sl st. (96 st)

Fasten off. Fold in the sides of the basket.

Round 1

1. Start by making a magic ring. Then make 8 single crochets in the magic ring.

2. Tighten the ring by pulling the end of the yarn. Next you will join with a slip stitch.

3. So, insert your hook in the top of the first single crochet and yarn over.

4. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

5. Pull the first loop through the second one. You have just connected with a slip stitch.

Round 2

6. Chain one.

7. Make a single crochet in the very first stitch.

8. Then make the second single crochet in the same stitch. You have just made a single crochet increase!

9. Continue making single crochet increases in every stitch until the end of the round.

10. At the end of the round join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.

Round 3

11. Chain one.

12. Make a single crochet in the very first stitch.

13. Then make a single crochet increase in the next stitch. Continue following the written pattern.

Round 15

14. In round 15 you will start making the two single crochet stitch. So, chain one.

15. Then make a single crochet in the very first stitch.

16. Make the second single crochet in the same stitch.

17. Skip one stitch and make two single crochets in the next stitch.

18. Then repeat: skip one stitch and make two single crochets in the next stitch.

19. Continue working in the same way until the end of the round.

20. At the end of the round join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.

Round 16

21. In round 16 you have to change yarn color to white. So, chain one with the white yarn.

22. Then pull the end of the red yarn to tighten up and secure the white yarn. Now the white yarn is ready to use. (Alternatively, to change yarn color, you could join with the slip stitch in the previous round using the white yarn.)

23. Chain one. Next you will make a single crochet in the middle of the second single crochet of the previous round.

24. So, insert your hook in the middle of the second single crochet and yarn over.

25. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

26. Yarn over.

27. Pull the yarn through.

28. Then make the second single crochet in the center of the same stitch.

29. Skip one stitch and make two single crochets in the center of the next stitch.

30. Then repeat: skip one stitch and make two single crochets in the center of the next stitch.

31. At the end of the round join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.

Round 17

32. Change yarn color to red. Chain one and make two single crochets in the center of the second single crochet of the previous round. Continue working in the same way as in round 16.

Round 28

33. Chain one and make a single crochet in the very first stitch.

34. Continue making single crochets in every stitch until the end of the round.

35. At the end of the round join with a slip stitch. Continue following the written pattern.

Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Soft FRAYA Cotton 8/4 100% Organic cotton 50g – 180 m, colors: black and orange.
Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used a 2.0 mm hook.

Abbreviations (US terms)

ch: chain
sl st: slip stitch

msc: modified single crochet

Notes

The diameter of my basket is 10.0 cm and the height is 5.0 cm (10.0 cm when not folded in).

For this pattern you should be familiar with the tapestry crochet (you can find the tutorial here). Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make the basket. This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here).

You will work in continuous rounds, which means that in the end of a round you don’t join with a slip stitch, but instead continue making modified single crochets in the top of the first stitch of the round. Remember to use a marker showing the beginning of each round. Follow the color chart showing how you should change colors.

Pattern

Start by making a magic (adjustable) ring with the black yarn.

Round 1: 8 sc in the magic ring. (8 st in total)

Introduce the orange yarn.

Round 2: msc inc in every st. (16 st)

Round 3: *msc inc, 1 msc in the next st*, rep ** 8 times. (24 st)

Round 4: msc; *msc inc, 2 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, msc. (32 st)

Round 5: 2 msc; *msc inc, 3 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, msc. (40 st)

Round 6: 3 msc; *msc inc, 4 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, msc. (48 st)

Round 7: 4 msc; *msc inc, 5 msc*, rep ** 7 times, msc inc, msc. (56 st)

Round 8: 5 msc; *msc inc, 6 msc*. rep ** 7 times, msc inc, msc. (64 st)

Round 13-35: msc in every st of the prev round. (96 st)

In the end make 4 additional sl st in the back loop only in the next 4 st to even out the edge. Fasten off. Fold in the sides of the basket.

Color chart

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. In total there are 96 stitches in one round. The chart represents a half of the pattern: the first 48 stitches (48 columns in the chart) in a round. Stitches 49-96 are the same as 1-48. Rows represent rounds (there are 35 rounds, however, the first 12 rounds are not shown in the color chart: they are all black and they are the round base of the basket). For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left.

Round 1

1. Start by making a magic ring. Then make 8 single crochets in the magic ring. Tighten the ring by pulling the end of the yarn.

Round 2

2. Don’t make a slip stitch. Instead insert your hook in the top of the first single crochet grabbing just the back loop.

3. Yarn over.

4. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook. In round 2 you have to introduce orange yarn. So, put the orange yarn behind your hook and in front of the black yarn like it is shown in the picture.

5. Then yarn under the black yarn.

6. Pull the yarn through. You have just made a modified single crochet.

7. To make a modified single crochet increase you have to make the second modified single crochet in the same stitch.

8. Continue making single crochet increases in every stitch until the end of the round.

Round 3

9. Make a modified single crochet increase in the first stitch, then make a modified single crochet. Continue following the written pattern.

Round 13

10. Keep following the written pattern until the end of round 13. Don’t complete the last stitch of the round, stop when you have two loops on your hook. The first stitch in round 14 is orange. This means that you have to change yarn color.

11. So, put the orange yarn up.

12. Yarn under the orange yarn.

13. Pull the yarn through. Now your orange yarn is ready to use.

Round 14

14. Continue working with the orange yarn.

Round 15

15. In round 15 make three full modified single crochets with the orange yarn. Then start making the fourth one, but complete it with the black yarn, because the fifth stitch in round 15 is black.

16. Start making the fifth stitch with the black yarn, but stop when you have two loops on your hook. The next stitch is orange, so you have to change yarn color again.

17. So, complete the fifth stitch with the orange yarn.

18. For the rest of the pattern follow the color chart.

Round 35

19. When you reach the end of round 35, you have to even out the edge by making four slip stitches in the back loop only.

20. Now you can put the orange yarn aside. Insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop.

21. Yarn over the black yarn.

22. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

23. Pull the first loop through the second one. You have just made a slip stitch in the back loop only.

24. Make three more slip stitches in the back loop only in the next three stitches. Then fasten off.

25. This is how the basket looks like when the sides are not folded in.

26. Fold in the sides of the basket (the folding line is on round 24). Done!

14. In round 12 you will make the simple daisy stitch. So, chain three. You will work in the second and third chain, then skip one stitch and work in the next one.

15. So, insert you hook in the second chain from your hook and yarn over.

16. Pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook. Next you will work in the next chain.

17. So, insert your hook in the next chain and yarn over.

30. Pull the yarn through. Now you have four loops on your hook.

31. Yarn over.

32. Pull the yarn through all loops on your hook.

34. Make the next stitch in the same way as before.

36. Don’t close the last stitch with chain one.

37. Insert your hook in the first stitch of this round.

38. Yarn over and pull the yarn through to make a slip stitch.

Round 13

39. Chain three. You will work in the second chain from your hook, in the center of the daisy stitch one round below and in the center of the next one.

40. So, insert your hook in the second chain from your hook, yarn over and pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

41. Insert your hook in the center of the daisy stitch one round below, yarn over and pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

42. Insert your hook in the center of the next daisy stitch, yarn over and pull the yarn through. Now you have four loops on your hook.

43. Yarn over.

44. Pull the yarn through all loops on your hook. Then chain one to close the stitch.

45. Next you will work in the center of the daisy stitch that you have just made, in the center of the daisy stitch one round below and in the center of the next daisy stitch.

46. So, insert your hook in the center of the stitch that you have just made, yarn over and pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

47. Then insert your hook in the center of the stitch that is one round below, yarn over and pull the yarn through. Now you have three loops on your hook.

48. Insert your hook in the center of the next daisy stitch in the previous round, yarn over and pull the yarn through. Now you have four loops on your hook.

49. Yarn over.

50. Pull the yarn through all loops on your hook.

51. Chain one to close the stitch.

52. Then make the next stitch in the same way.

53. Continue working in the same way until the end of the round.

54. Don’t chain one to close the last stitch.

55. At the end of the round join with a slip stitch.

Round 23

56. This is how the basket looks like when all 23 rounds are completed. Next you have to fold the sides of the basket inside.

Here is a free crochet pattern for a tapestry crochet basket with Christmas trees. It is not complicated to make and it won’t take much time.
